239 - It's No Secret There's Money in Podiatry with Tyson E Franklin

This is a solo episode, and I chose to go solo because it is the last episode for 2022, and I wanted to talk about a few essential topics that I think will make 2023 a more successful year for you, your career and your business.

I've titled this episode, It's No Secret There's Money in Podiatry, and even though that is the same title as my 2014 book, the information I'm about to share is not in it.

Important takeaways from this episode:

  • Every big business started as a small business – Apple, Facebook and Nike all began as small businesses.
  • Your attitude will determine your success – For every business screaming doom and gloom, another company is doing exceptionally well, which applies to every industry.

"Whether you think you can or think you can't, either way, you're right". – Henry Ford.

There are three things you must do:

  1. Set Business Goals – You must review them often because life tends to get in the way.
  2. Develop Business Systems – A business with systems will always sell for more than a business without systems.
  3. Understand Marketing Basics – This skill is required to avoid being ripped off and taken advantage of.

238 - Care Differently with Jeff Peterson

What does Care Differently mean? If you want your business to be different, you've got to care about your clients differently, and giving them a discount does not mean you care; it only means you're trying to be cheaper than your competitor down the street. If you put your client's needs first, the rest of your business will fall into place naturally.

My guest, Jeff Peterson, is the owner of Interstate Music in Wisconsin, USA, an online music business with a Musician's First Mindset.

Jeff's marketing strategy with Interstate Music is mind-blowing and utterly different from how marketing is usually done in the music industry. It is pure genius, which is why he won the top honours at the Wisconsin Small Business Awards.

I've always said you should learn from what others are doing in different industries and ask yourself, how can I apply that in my business?

In this episode, Jeff and I discuss the following:

  • The power of storytelling and how it can emotionally connect with the receiver.
  • Human nature is about connectively. You either connect or don't connect with people, which can make everything or break everything in business relationships.
  • What makes a person think they are good enough in their career to lead the charge to be an expert in their industry?
  • Don't die with the music (or knowledge) still in you.
  • The benefits of sharing what you know with others.
  • You don't have to have all the answers.
  • Business didn't come naturally; it was something I had to learn.
  • When your business gets bigger, people will take potshots at you.
  • What Jeff learnt taking over a business that went into bankruptcy and the importance of understanding the numbers of a business.

Hire Good People

When you're looking for people to join your Team, you should hire good people, not good resumes. They either have it or they don't. If they don't, they're not for you.

Care Differently

You've always got to consider what your customers want and need and whether you can provide it. You cannot keep being the same as everyone else and expect a different result, and simply saying you care more or giving discounts to beat your competitors does not mean you do.

You need to show them you care more with your consistent actions. You must find out what truly matters to your customers and deliver on that.

At Interstate Music, they developed a Musician's First Mindset; they take what they do for a living and help them develop it further. They help them create content (video, photos, etc.) and work with them to develop their exposure in the industry.

By building authentic relationships with Musicians, Jeff and his Team at Interstate Music are building long-term trusting relationships within the music industry. If musicians buy their equipment from Interstate Music in the future…well, that's a bonus.

Do you have a Client First Mindset or are you focused on your needs?

Slow Bleed & Loss of Energy

If you focus too long on your competition and not on your own business, it is a death spiral and slow bleed for your business, especially if they are not spending time thinking about you.

Be aware of your competitors, and pay attention, but don't become obsessed.

Everyone gets into business for a reason, and there will always be some form of energy behind them making this decision. Don't waste your energy worrying about what everyone else is doing.

If you do, you won't have the energy to work on your own business.

Social Media

Don't use social media platforms just because someone else is doing it. Ask yourself, will this platform work for my business? Are my ideal clients using this platform? If they are, work on a long-term strategy to make it work for you, don't just follow what everyone else is doing.

The Power of Marketing

When we recorded this podcast (and YouTube video), Jeff and I were drinking a can of Liquid Death, which is just a can of water.

There's no screw top lid, which makes it slightly impractical and not very portable, but it is cool, and they have marketed it exceptionally well. Their tagline is 'Murder Your Thirst'.

Jeff and I agreed you don't have to do something new, but you need to market it better or differently.

  • How can you apply this idea to your podiatry business?
  • What can I do to charge a premium in my podiatry business?

Adapt Over Time

You should be evolving and adapting your business over time. You should be updating how you do things. You should always be looking for a different perspective. Staying the same while others are moving forward means you are falling behind.

You don't do this just for your patients; you're also doing this for your Team. They need to know they are in a progressive business.

Your Team needs to buy into your vision for the future.

Learn & Share

If you make a mistake or do something wrong, you've got to be able to work out why it was wrong and learn from it, and when you learn something new, share it with those that will listen.

Don't keep it as the best-kept secret.

Ep 237 (UNCUT) The Loved One's Test with Jonathan Small

Suppose someone in your family needed medical treatment. Would you be happy if the treating doctor only gave them limited treatment options because they had a limited skill set, or would you prefer the doctor explained ALL the available treatment options, even if it meant they had to refer them to another doctor or specialist?

This is the basis of The LOVED ONE's Test.

If you prefer audio, this episode is available on all podcast platforms.

Jonathan Small has appeared on this podcast nine times. I keep inviting him back because he delivers relevant, practitioner-driven content every time, and The LOVED ONE's Test is no different. He is also the owner of Health First Foot & Gait Clinic in Southam, UK.

In this episode, we discuss the following:

  • Informed Consent.
  • The Patient Experience.
  • Providing the best level of care.
  • Building trust with your patients through referrals, don't be afraid of losing patients.

Suppose you cannot treat a particular problem. In that case, it is better for the profession if you can refer them to another podiatrist that can treat the problem instead of referring them to a Physiotherapist or General Practitioner.

If you have any questions about this episode or Jonathan's Work Smarter, Not Harder 2-Day Workshop in 2023, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com.

236 - What is the Podiatry Marketing Podcast with Dr Jim McDannald, DPM

Did you know I co-host a second podcast show called the Podiatry Marketing Podcast with Dr Jim McDannald, DPM, aka Big Jim Mac? At the beginning of January 2022, Jim and I thought it would be fun to create a podcast about the two things we loved most, Marketing & Marketing.

Each week we take turns interviewing each other. Jim interviews me on a particular marketing subject that I'm passionate about, and then on the alternative week, I turn the tables on Jim, and he gets to choose the topic.

Most episodes are less than 25 minutes long, making them easy to consume and grasp the BIG IDEA from each show. If you enjoy the Podiatry Legends Podcast, you will also enjoy the Podiatry Marketing Podcast.

If you have any questions about this episode, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com, or you can contact Jim and me via the Podiatry Marketing Podcast website at https://www.podiatry.marketing/contact/.

235 - Career Transition with Kirsten Sinclair

If you’re not happy with an aspect of your podiatry career, take action and change it. That is precisely what Kirsten Sinclair has done throughout her career in podiatry.

Kirsten is a Scottish podiatrist who qualified from Queen Margaret University in 2001.

Kirsten initially worked in the NHS, as many new graduates do; however, after falling pregnant with her first child, within the first 12 months of her employment, she could not return to the NHS part-time. She was given a choice; work full-time work or leave the NHS.

Kirsten decided to leave the NHS and instead developed a part-time home visit service to work around her children.

From Routine Care to MSK

In 2018, after her children had grown up, Kirsten decided to open her own stand-alone private practice, some 17 years after graduating, and as Kirsten puts it, “it’s never too late”.

However, after doing home visits and routine care for 17 years and not using her MSK knowledge, it did take some time for her to transition back into this area of podiatry.

She found attending biomechanical seminars and weekend workshops and asking questions, especially from her orthotic laboratory, was especially helpful in improving her MSK skills.

“If you want something bad enough, you will be prepared to do the work”.

Bigger is Not Always Better

Kirsten learnt that owning her own business can be stressful and bigger is not always better. You have far more responsibilities and stress when you expand and take on more team members.

The stress of business ownership was difficult, and she often asked herself if going bigger was a good idea or if she should have stayed small and continued to work as a solo practitioner.

“I think a lot of podiatrists as themselves this same question”.

Therapeutic Lasers

In 2019 Kirsten was introduced to therapeutic lasers (aka photobiomodulation therapy/PBMT), which changed everything for her. Before this, she only used shockwave therapy but found laser therapy far more effective.

In 2021 she started working for Celtic part-time and then in January 2022, decided to transition again from business ownership and take on a full-time position as a clinical demonstrator and trainer, teaching others how to use MLS laser to benefit their patients, their practice and them as practitioners.

234 - Simple Video Solutions for Podiatrists

Most podiatrists know they should shoot more videos, and they want to shoot more videos, but it often seems complicated and time-consuming. Well, this podcast will solve this problem once and for all.

Kirsty Nancarrow & Suzie Cray from eMotion Video Training & Production explain that all you need is your iPhone or Android and a few simple Apps, and you are well on your way to creating some mind-blowing and engaging videos that will WOW your patients.

In this episode, we cover the following:

  • The power of smartphones. Everything you need is in your hand.
  • Why using video is good for business.
  • Video builds trust.
  • Why video consumption has increased since COVID.
  • People are hunting for information, so you need to give it to them, or they will go elsewhere.

Video Production

Turn a flat, boring video into something special by using wide, mid and close shots. Here is the Coffee Video discussed on the podcast - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhUv162acgw

Also, here is the knife sharpening video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gu6LBRgIQqo

Improve Productivity

If you want to save time, it's best to record in bulk. Think about what you want to record and shoot 20 short videos in one hour. Afterwards, you can set time aside to edit each video and add intros and outros if needed.

Recommended Apps

If you think entering business awards is a bit WANKY, we're here to tell you it is the exact opposite. Joe Keain is the co-owner of Pod Fit Podiatry, and he was named Australian Podiatrist of the Year at this year's Allied Health Awards. Joe and I encourage all podiatrists to step up and positively represent the podiatry profession when the opportunity arises.

This year there were over one hundred podiatrist submissions, and in this episode, Joe explains the five key questions he had to answer that formed a major part of his application.

We also discuss the benefits of entering awards, whether you win or not, and how to use the awards process in your marketing to build social proof with your community.

In this episode, we discuss the following:

  • Why practice ownership is not for everyone.
  • Why she likes to move forward when others are cautious.
  • Winning a major business award in the UK and what you learn about yourself and your business as you move through the process.
  • Why business awards are great for the podiatry profession.
  • How she developed her footcare product range.

230 - A New Type of Orthotic with Geoff Dowling & Noura Tashakor

Geoff Dowling initially studied prosthetics and orthotics at university and then went back to complete podiatry. Geoff worked closely with a foot and ankle surgeon for three years and saw many foot and ankle pathologies. Through this experience, he also saw a lot of ineffective orthotic devices.

After starting his clinic, Geoff was disheartened to see orthotics that were not providing patients with the best clinical outcome, so together with his wife Noura, they decided to design a new type of device, Modulign Orthotics

If you want to connect with Geoff, you can email him at geoff@modulign.com.au.

Ep 229 - Kent Sweeting I Just Kept Saying Yes

Kent Sweeting graduated from the Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, in 2004 and over his career, he has kept saying yes to every opportunity presented to him.

This 'just say yes' attitude has been integral to developing his career from clinical podiatrist and owner of Performance Podiatry & Physio to researcher and eventual owner of Queensland Orthotic Lab.

If you are looking for a Podiatry Business Coach that thinks differently, please visit my website https://www.tysonfranklin.com/Coaching. 117 - 12 Week Podiatry Business Reboot

What are you podiatry business plans for 2021? Have you given it much thought or is it going to be a repeat of 2020, and yes I know COVID has been a hurdle but did you know that some podiatry business had their best year?

It didn't happen by accident, they had their best year because they adapted to the current situation and took action.

Now before YOU SWITCH OFF and think SHIT, this is just going to be a sales podcast, hang around for a little bit longer as you may learn a few things.

On this episode, I am joined by:

Carly O’Donoghue – Stepping Out Podiatry (Sunshine Coast)

Chloe Wear – The Woodvale Podiatrist (Perth)

Aadila Dadda – Happy Feet Queensland (Brisbane)

Jasmine Kouch – 2 Right Feet Podiatry (Kilsyth, Victoria)

Trina Goard – Armidale Podiatry (Armidale)

Judi France – Toowoomba Podiatry (Toowoomba)

Jonathan Small – Health First Foot & Gait Clinic (Southam, UK)

The reason I asked them to join me for this particular episode is that they’ve all completed the 12-Week Podiatry Business Reboot and have flourished, and I think it would be beneficial to hear from podiatrists who have gone before you.

No One Knew the Questions

I’d like to point out I have not given anyone these questions to think about first, so I’m not exactly sure what they’re going to say, which I knew would be fun and also produce some very honest answers.

Initial Questions Around Coaching

Q1: - Have you ever been in a coaching program before?

Q2: When you first heard about the 12-Week Podiatry Business Reboot, why did you decide to do it? What was happening or not happening in your business?

We then moved onto discussing specific questions about the content in the 12-Week Program

  • WEEK 1: Developing Team Culture– Which was about aligning your team with your own business beliefs and values. And, even if you're a solo practitioner, you still have a team (Accountant etc).
  • Q3: Was that a useful topic?
  • Weeks 2-5: Covered Systems (Recalls, Reactivation & Incomplete Rx)- There is a difference in how these are used.
  • Q4: Most podiatrists have systems, but did this program open your eyes to a few holes that may have existed with what you previously had set up?

We also covered Patient Journeys and Treatment Journeys and how a patient flows through your business and the potential services you may offer.

  • Q5: Did this change the way you approached your patients?
  • Week 6: We dug deep into finding your Ideal Patient & Niching
  • Q6: Did you get more clarity on who your ideal patient was, and the type of podiatry work you should be targeting?
  • Week 7: Pre-framing Conversations & Directing the Conversation - Selling without selling.
  • Q7: Did this help with your communication?
  • Week 8-9: Developing your marketing strategy, creating a Yearly Marketing Plan(Roadmap) and  Developing a Daily, Weekly and Monthly Marketing Plan (GPS)
  • Q8: Prior to doing the 12-week reboot, did you have a 12-month roadmap for your marketing, or did you just play it by ear?
  • Weeks 9-12: Protecting & Developing Your Brand and improving your web presence/website.
  • We also discussed understanding the important NUMBERS in your business that really matter, which lead to a concept called Punctuated Equilibrium.

If you've got this far, I’ll explain what is involved in the 12-Week Reboot:

  • 12 x 1-hour weekly Zoom Meetings: All meetings are recorded and uploaded to a private Facebook Group, so if for some reason you cannot make a scheduled meeting, you can catch up with the recording.
  • Q9: Did anyone here miss a meeting?
  • Weekly Q & A session via Zoom
  • Templates & Frameworks: As we work through each session, templates and frameworks will be uploaded to the FACEBOOK GROUP.
  • Q10: Did everyone find them useful?
  • Unlimited email questions during the 12-weeks program
  • Video tutorials are created for common group questions

To wrap up, if someone has listened to this and they’re sitting on the fence what would be your advice be?

106 - (Part 1) Podiatry Students Around The World 2020

On this episode, I talk with a group of podiatry students from Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. The students studying podiatry right now are the future of our profession, so all of us need to understand how they think and how they view the profession they have chosen to become a part of.

The full podcast recording is well over 90-minutes, so I decided to break it easier to digest by breaking it into parts one and two.

The questions I asked on this episode are:

Q1: What areas of podiatry do you like most and why?

Q2: How important do you think social media is in podiatry?

If you're a current podiatry business and you're considering employing a new graduate soon, I think you'll find their answers very insightful.

My podiatry student guests include:

  • Sarah Cox - Charles Stuart University (AUS)
  • Josh McGill - La Trobe University (AUS)
  • Ektaa Vadgama - University of Northhampton (UK)
  • Emily Reaney - University of Huddersfield (UK)
  • Amarilys Montalvo - Barry University (USA)
  • Yona Mizrahi - California School of Podiatric Medicine (USA)
  • Diksha Mohapatra - California School of Podiatric Medicine (USA)

Podiatry Business Coaching

If you want to own and operate a Thriving Podiatry Business, there are four vital pieces to the business puzzle.

  • Marketing - You need a well thought out marketing strategy, not just more tactics.
  • Systems - You need systems that will support your marketing strategy and your team.
  • Team - You need to develop a team culture that makes your work-life balance easier, not harder.
  • Diary - Your diary needs to be structured in a way that maximises patient numbers and increases daily profits.

You have two choices: There's the slow approach, where you learn by trial and error and do everything yourself, or you can fast-track your education and business success with one-on-one Business Coaching or join my next 12-Week Podiatry Business Reboot group coaching program.

If you want to know more, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com, and we can set up a Zoom Call and have a quick chat to see if I can be of assistance.
