186 - Ciaran Canney the Foot Medic Group

Ciaran Canney is the director of the MSK podiatry clinic, Foot Medic, based in Glasgow, UK. He is the Co-Founder of the Foot Medic Group, a network of podiatry clinics across the UK and Ireland.

His business partner is Damian Murray, who was on this podcast on Episode 85: The Podiatrist in the Pinstriped Scrubs.

Today we discuss:

  • Building a brand in healthcare and the team to help you do it.
  • Growing your clinic through systems.
  • Why it takes time to create the right team.
  • Why you shouldn't copy what other podiatrists are doing because you could also be copying their mistakes.
  • Firing someone never gets easier; you just get used to having to do it.
  • Why you should always be one pound more than your competitors, not one pound less.
  • The three parts to the Foot Medic Group
    • Partnership Program
    • Mergers
    • Acquisitions
  • Avoiding negativity on social media.
  • Having a positive support network.

Final Tip

Don't compete with the practice down the road; instead, compete with yourself, and then you've got to commit and show up every day to make it a reality.

184 - Hiren Patel Team Culture & Podiatry Technology

Hiren Patel is the owner of Flawless Feet Podiatry & Laser Clinic, London, UK. He currently has four locations, and his podiatry business has grown because he loves what he does; he has developed a great team culture and a happy work environment. Hiren has also never backed away from podiatry technology, especially if it will assist in patient care, treatment outcomes and team happiness.

As Hiren explains, you should not be concerned about what equipment is out there; first, work out what you like treating and then search for the right piece of technology to fulfil your needs.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Specialisation in the field of podiatry.
  • The importance of having fun with your patients.
  • Why attitude is more important than clinical skills.
  • Small things that are conversation starters.
  • Beans Mean Hiren.
  • Building your reputation.
  • Educating and communicating with your patients.
  • The importance of patients understanding the treatment process.
  • Using technology increases your fulfilment and enjoyment.
  • Using technology helps with your mindset and makes your team happy.
  • Technology makes your life and your patient's life easier.
  • Technology sets your podiatry business apart from everyone else.
  • Buying the type of equipment that is going to suit your patients.

Treat what you love treating and go out and find a piece of equipment that’s going to suit you.

Final Tip

Don't just look at what people have got now; it's more important to find out how they got there. Learn that process first. Time and commitment will get you to where you want to be.

If you want to connect with Hiren, please send him an email to Hello@flawlessfeet.com.

183 - Wound Management with Dr Frances Henshaw

Dr Frances Henshaw from ConvaTec, is an experienced podiatric clinician, researcher and scientist. She recently jumped the fence into the corporate world, where she is passionate about raising the bar and making wound education interesting, accessible and fun.

The overarching theme of her PhD research has been understanding mechanisms of foot ulceration so that targeted prevention and treatments can be developed.

Frances has over 15 years of experience as a business owner, 20 years as a clinician and more than ten years as an academic at Western Sydney University.

"With good care, the wound will heal".

Big Tip

Wounds don't heal quickly, so stop second-guessing yourself. You could ask four different podiatrists about how they would treat a wound, and you will get four different answers, and they're probably all right.

If you want to ask Frances any questions, you can email her at frances.henshaw@convatech.com.

Her podcast is called The Wound Doctors

182 - Gemma Hodgson The Foot Lab

Gemma Hodgson is the owner of The Foot Lab, a unique high-end looking podiatry business in Glossip, in the United Kingdom. As Gemma puts it, going cheap was never an option.

Gemma is passionate about private practice and business ownership but also believes that we should be empowering other podiatrists to have the confidence to put their dreams and thoughts into action and be the best clinicians they can be.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Why Gemma invested in a high-end look.
  • Developing a patient experience, second to none.
  • Why great treatment does not always equal a great experience. Ever had great food yet lousy service?
  • Marketing: understanding and educating your audience and patients.
  • Branding & social media: The benefits of putting yourself out there.
  • Starting with a small budget and putting in the work.
  • Smashing it on Facebook.

From Zero to Hero

Gemma started with zero patients, and within 6-months, she was working full-time just by using Facebook.

How is this possible?

Gemma began marketing herself and telling her story, and sharing her journey as a student.

Gemma has patients follow her clinic on social media, and then she constantly educates them, and she has done this from day one.

Be Different

You should always look for good, educational content and don't try to be like everyone else. Being a little bit different will make you stand out.

This is how the branding and thinking behind The Foot Lab

Competition is Good

If you want to perform at the highest level and raise podiatry's overall awareness, you need to have healthy competition.

Healthy competition means you're working together towards better patient outcomes, and if you embrace this, we can all learn from each other.

Your Team

As the business owner, it is up to you to create a happy and encouraging environment for my team to flourish. A happy team equals happy patients, which results in good business.

"Never too late to change something in your life if you are unhappy".

Final Tip

Don't overthink things, and don't put hurdles in front of yourself.

181 - David M Frees Force Multipliers to Make Podiatrists More Powerful

David M Frees is from Phoenixville, Pennsylvania and in this episode, he will discuss FORCE MULTIPLIERS, a technique, when used correctly, will make podiatrists more powerful, better communicators and far more influential with their patients.

Dave Frees has been referred to as the Grandmaster of persuasion and influence by Steve Forbes, Editor-In-Chief of Forbes Magazine and Forbes Media. He's a sought after speaker on leadership, sales and marketing, and has had a close working relationship with podiatrists for many years.

Dave is a civilian; however, he has worked closely with the military and armed forces in the United States. He has taken what he has learnt from top negotiators, interrogators and special forces operators to devise a unique method for day-to-day business operations.

Topics discussed:

  • Meta-Force Multipliers, Strategic Force Multipliers and Tactical Force Multipliers.
  • Stories work when you imbed them within the content you are delivering to your patients.

Meta-Level

  • Ways we can be a more powerful version of who we are.
  • How can we think better

Strategic-Level

  • Ideas that guide us in the right direction.
  • Developing systems for all our tactics makes them easier and easier to do.
  • Developing a system for marketing - take the ideas in your head (strategy) to make them a reality (the tactic)
  • Training is a strategic force multiplier.
    • Building a system around training.
    • Record the training
    • Use it online
    • Sell to other podiatrists
  • Using rules and models (OODA LOOP)
  • Get clarity around your purpose, values and mission, and knowing the exact patient you want is strategic.
    • When you know where your ideal patient is, you'll know where to do your marketing.
    • Use this information to decide on the tactic, such as email.
  • Alignment: What we're about to do, is it in alignment with our purpose, values and mission and is it going to be loved and will it help support our ideal patients

Tactical-Level

  • Doing a particular type of marketing to get a specific type of patient.
  • It is used to get the right kind of patients.
  • Did it work?
    • Yes, then do more of it. This forms part of your strategy.

Meta Level is Mental Level (Mindset)

Learning how to stay strong and recover from damage or a downturn in performance is meta-level thinking.

With a good mindset, you become way less bothered by problems.

Difference Between Persuasion & Influence is INTENT

All human communication is manipulative in one way or another. When you tell a joke, you're trying to manipulate the person into laughing.

When you teach, you're trying to help someone become a more informed person. When you yell, you may be trying to intimidate.

Some people say this is manipulation, but it depends on your intent. Helping someone is not manipulative.

Build Trust & Influence

Telling the patient the truth builds trust. If an orthotic is not going to help their problem, be truthful.

Be aware that patients may be imprecise with their speech, so circle-back with what they said to get more clarity.

When you repeatedly give the patient the result they are after, you will become influential, and this is where you want to be. Being influential is not being manipulative.

Also, when a patient trusts you, you can make a mistake, and they will forgive you.

Deeper Communication

When a patient tells you their concern/problem, ask them, "WHAT ELSE?"

They will dig deeper and give you more information.

Then say, "AND", and the patient will happily give you more information than you would have initially gotten from them.

You could also ask:

"I'm curious, is there any other reason that you came here today or are there any other outcomes you would like out of this visit today?"

or

"How would your life be better if…."

This communication tool is at the tactical level, and it may not work every time, but don't give up easily.

Remind yourself that it didn't work this time; with this patient on this particular issue, it doesn't mean it doesn't work.

Stimulus & Response

There is usually a stimulus when you get angry, but there will be a small GAP between the stimulus and the response. It would be best if you learned how to put space between the stimulus and the response.

A cool little trick is to name that emotion when it occurs and recognise it.

"Ohh, that's anger that I'm feeling".

Take a deep breath, cultivate the gap and interrupt the response.

Interrupting the Gap

Confusion often leads to frustration, then anger; however, confusion means you are about to make a breakthrough in your learning.

So instead of getting frustrated and angry, change the mental narrative to anticipation. Confusion leads to anticipation of new learnings, and this is a better mindset to get the learning you want.

Optimise What's Working

Optimise what's working and stop what's not working. It sounds simple, but it's hard for some podiatrists to do.

Constantly explore what's working in your business and spend some time hypothesising why it works and can you make it better.

Minor tweaks can make a massive difference in the outcome.

If you want to learn more from Dave or about his Business Black Ops event, held in Arizona each October, you can email his assistant Lisa at Lsnyder@utbf.com.

180 - Difference Between One-On-One Business Coaching & Group Coaching

Have you ever considered business coaching but was unsure if you should do one-on-one coaching or group coaching? If your answer is yes, then this podcast episode will help answer some of those questions.

I do both one-on-one business coaching and run a group coaching program, called the 12-Week Podiatry Business Reboot.

Why do both?

Podiatrists in business have different needs, and more often than not, some prefer group coaching first and then move on to 1-on-1 coaching as their business matures.

Benefits of 1-on-1 Business Coaching Versus Group Coaching

  1. Detailed analysis and tailored solutions to specific problems in your business, whereas group coaching will give general information about common business problems and rough guides on how to overcome them.
  2. Detailed strategies are designed for your specific business and your business and personal goals, whereas group coaching will give general information and strategies that are widely known to work.
  3. There's less distraction with 1-on-1 business coaching. All the attention is placed on you, whereas in group coaching, there's no focus on you as an individual, and sometimes in groups, one or two people may try and steal the limelight and talk a lot.
  4. Coaching sessions will usually fit your busy schedule, whereas group coaching sessions are set in stone.
  5. There's no cookie-cutter format or time restraints on specific topics. In group coaching, the topics are set, and they are time-bound.
  6. It's far more personal, and because of this, you will be more inclined to share personal and financial information, whereas you won't do this in a group situation.

Membership Groups are a little different to group coaching. I have a membership group called the Podiatry Business Spartans. They do openly share a lot of information with each other; however, certain criteria must be met to join this group, which is why it's a safe group for sharing.

Is 1-on-1 Business Coaching For You?

It is, especially if you want to grow your business, increase profit margins, or overcome specific issues that you feel are holding you back.

You may need help with team motivation, productivity, retention and better ways to attract new team members. For others, they may need specific help with developing marketing strategies that work consistently.

A Good Coach Help You Avoid Bright Shiny Lights

I'm sure you would have seen ads on Facebook and other social media channels promoting quick fixes. Do this one simple technique, and you'll get 23 new bookings in 24 hours…it worked for John, so it has to work for you, right! Maybe it will, perhaps it won't.

Having a steady flow of new patients and existing patients returning is extremely important; that's how you grow a sustainable business; however, developing systems that will make your business run more smoothly and look after your patients are far more critical.

Having systems in place that nurture your patients during and after each appointment is of paramount importance.

Just Starting Out

If you're just starting out in business, group coaching may be a better solution so you can gather general information and avoid some of the common pitfalls most podiatry business owners go through. Avoiding mistakes will speed up your success.

There Are Benefits to Group Coaching

  1. There's usually a lower cost to get started, which can help with cash flow if money is tight.
  2. It's a great way to meet and network with other people.
  3. If it's an engaging group, you can learn a lot from each other's experiences.
  4. You don't have to participate if you don't want to. Instead, you may just listen, and that's okay.

Psychology Paper

I know podiatrists love research, so to conclude, I want to mention a Psychology Paper by Sabine Losch et al. 2016, titled, Comparing the Effectiveness of Individual Coaching, Self-Coaching, and Group Coaching: How Leadership Makes the Difference.

In their conclusion, they note that individual coaching and training enhance performance and goal attainment, but they also refer to the coach's leadership style, behaviour and experiences, and how this impacts the client's perceptions and motivation, which can predict coaching success.

This is why it's crucial to choose the right business coach and do your homework before choosing.

179 - The Good, the Bad & the Ugly of Podiatry with Jonathan Small

Jonathan Small is the owner of Health First Foot & Gait Clinic in Southam, UK, and today we're discussing the good, the bad and the ugly of the podiatry profession and how we think it can be changed for the better.

We also discuss:

  • Why podiatry may be undervalued by the public.
  • Apathetic podiatrists do not enjoy what they do and how this reflects on the patient.
  • Why do some podiatrists lose interest in delivering the highest care to their patients?
  • The benefits of associating with passionate podiatrists.
  • The importance of new graduates seeing what good podiatry looks like before they open their own podiatry business.
  • Starting a business with good podiatric values.
  • Why cheap podiatry devalues good podiatry.
  • The danger of not using all your podiatry skills and falling into the trap of just doing easy work.
  • Changing the mindset of the profession.
  • The benefits of working together, not in competition.

The Good: Are those podiatrists that are out there shouting the value of feet to the public and embracing the importance of ongoing podiatry promotion.

The Bad: These podiatrists do not harm others, which is good, but they sit there idle and do no promotion for podiatry. These podiatrists usually need a little guidance to become good.

The Ugly: These are the trolls of the profession that go out of their way to harm others. You cannot help these podiatrists.

Final Tip

Don't take the knocks from one individual about your value and worth as a podiatrist. Never take negative reviews from a patient personally. It's just one person's opinion, and for every one negative review, there will be hundreds of people singing your praises; they're just not putting it in writing.

One-On-One Business Coaching Versus Group Coaching

I want to discuss the benefits of one-on-one business coaching, as opposed to group coaching. This topic was fresh in my mind because I was recently asked if I did one-on-one business coaching. Why do both?

People in business have different needs, and more often than not, someone will try group coaching first and then move on to 1-on-1 coaching as they mature as business owners.

Ep 178 (UNCUT): Educate Yourself to Invest Outside of Podiatry with Judi...

Judi France is the owner of Toowoomba Podiatry in Queensland. In addition to her ongoing podiatry education, Judi also made a conscious effort to educate herself about investing her money outside of podiatry in preparation for her future.

Living lousy for a short period of time and paying off your debt as fast as you can is a great investment strategy; it will pay huge dividends long-term and is something Judi wants younger podiatrists to understand.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Adversity and failure lead to opportunity
  • The balance between practice ownership and Continuing Education.
  • Investing outside of podiatry.
  • Go without now and reap the rewards later.
  • Living lousy and paying off debt quick
  • Educating yourself to make money outside of podiatry.
  • Investing Overseas

Final Tip

If you don't know where to start when it comes to investing, begin reading money and investing magazines.

Chris Desmond is a Physiotherapist in Wellington, New Zealand. He is the host of the Art of Healthcare podcast, which explores the human side of healthcare and how it relates to providing excellent clinical outcomes for our patients.

At university, we learn the clinical aspects of our profession well. After university, a lot of continuing education focuses on improving our clinical skills and knowledge, which is extremely important; however, that's only part of it.

If you want to be a great podiatrist and healthcare provider, you need to understand the human skills of healthcare.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Resilience Strategies
  • Turning the voices off in your head
  • Why do some patients get better clinical outcomes when they see someone else, even though they provide the same treatment?
  • Improving communication skills.
  • Experienced clinicians versus new graduates.
  • Daily preparation and mental resets.
  • New techniques and new technology do not make you a better clinician.
  • Patient Identity: Don't just look at the physical injury or symptoms; dig deeper so you can understand how it affects their identity.

Book Recommendation: Travis Christofferson  - Curable

Final tip

Always remember the patient in front of you is a person; treat them as a person. Also, remember you are a person as well, be a person, not a clinician.

175 - Wilson Lawrence Identity Lock & Patient Communication

Wilson Lawrence is a Personal Development and Performance Coach who specialises in helping people find success without compromising their health and happiness.

This episode discusses how you can become a better communicator with your patients and why better communication leads to far greater patient compliance and long-term treatment success.

We also cover:

  • Decoding what you say so patients can understand you more clearly.
  • Why it's essential to avoid industry language.
  • Developing clarity in your communication.
  • Identity Lock & understanding who you are. Being a podiatrist is not your identity; it's just a powerbase.
  • Identity lock prevents you from adaptive communication.

Final Tip

Think about the outcome you want to achieve from every conversation you want to have and select your language accordingly.

Competence-Competence Loop

Improving communication is a success-habit, and we're all creatures of habit. The more we do something, the more competent we become, and the more competent we become, the more confident we become.

174 - Stacey Keating KIDZOLES (Orthotics for Kids)

Stacey Keating is the brain behind the online business KIDZOLES, a unique prefabricated orthotic system specifically designed for children with heel pain, but Kidzoles is more than just an orthotic; it's a total heel pain package.

Stacey is from Perth, Western Australia. During her career, she has run six successful Podiatry Businesses in Victoria and Western Australia with her husband Matt, who is also a qualified  Podiatrist.

Before selling their podiatry businesses, they opened a prescription orthotic laboratory and, using her experience and background in manufacturing custom orthoses, formed the inspiration to create Kidzoles.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Developing a heel pain program.
  • Why she offers a money-back guarantee.
  • Taking the Kidzoles business online.
  • Handling rejection.
  • Being a role model for her children.
  • The benefits of providing strengthening programs with each Kidzole purchase.

"In practice, I would never issue an orthotic without also giving the patient an exercise program, so I couldn't have a prefabricated orthotic company that was just dishing out orthotics and not having an exercise program behind them".

173 - Dr Misty McNeill When to Start, When to Sell

When is the right time to transition from an employee to a business owner? And more importantly, when is it the right time to sell?

It's going to be different for everyone, and my guest, Dr Misty McNeill from Prairie Path Foot & Ankle Clinic in Elmhurst, Illinois, shares her unique story of transitioning through these three stages and what she learnt along the way.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Her big WHY.
  • With business ownership, there are tradeoffs.
  • The enormous long-term benefits of spending less than you make.
  • Debt creates pressure, and pressure can make you do things that don't align with your values. Do not become a slave to debt.
  • Creating a flexible work environment.
  • Attracting podiatrists looking for the same lifestyle.
  • WHY did she sell and choose to become an employee again?

"I became an owner so I could have time for myself, but now I want not to be the owner so I can have time for myself."

Final Tip:

Live within your means, and be clear about what serves you. If it's not a definite YES, then it's a NO.

172 - Dr Misty McNeill Learning from Disney

This episode is not what I initially set out to produce, but I'm so glad the first 20-minutes of my conversation with Dr Misty McNeill from Prairie Path Foot & Ankle Clinic in Elmhurst, Illinois, took a deviation from the original topic.

Dr Misty McNeill was invited onto the podcast to discuss her transition from employee to business owner and then from business owner to employee. It's a great story, and we did discuss it, but only after talking about our love and learnings from Disney first.

Because these two topics are vastly different, I thought they each deserved a separate episode, so this week's episode is about Learning from Disney and next week, you'll get the story behind Dr McNeill's career.

Topics Discussed:

  • Creating raving fans
  • Disney refers to all employees as Cast Members because everyone plays a part in the success of Disney.
  • Disney treats their cast members so well; it trickles down to the customers.
  • All trainees wear a badge that says Earning My Ears. At Misty's podiatry business, her trainees wear a badge that says Taking My First Steps
  • Disney makes waiting in line fun.
  • Disney sets standards that apply to everyone in the company, even the bosses.
  • Book recommendation: Be Our Guest

Ep 171 - Deb Johnstone Showing Up For Yourself

Episode 171 - Deb Johnstone from Transformational Pathways Australia will explain WHY you need to be showing up for yourself daily and HOW it creates new business opportunities that would have otherwise be missed or overlooked.

If you prefer audio you can download and listen from this link https://bit.ly/PodLegends171 or your favourite podcast platform.

171 - Deb Johnstone Showing Up For Yourself

Deb Johnstone from Transformational Pathways Australia will explain WHY you need to be showing up for yourself daily and HOW it creates new business opportunities that would have otherwise be missed or overlooked.

Deb has been on the Podiatry Legends Podcast before, Episode 89: My Mindset Coach.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • The importance of making a commitment to ourselves.
  • Understanding where certain behaviours lead you.
  • The difference between showing up and showing up fully.
  • The importance of being aware when you're not showing up.
  • Language creates your reality, and using the wrong language can lead to missed opportunities. For example;
    • I’m too busy - means you're putting your time elsewhere.
    • I can’t afford it  - it means you're spending your money on something else.
  • Ongoing personal development and health are significant, but they are two common areas of life where people often don't show up for themselves.
  • Showing up for yourself is about putting yourself first; it’s not about being selfish. It's about allowing time for you.

Four essential steps to show up for yourself:

  1. Being Aware - You need to have an awareness of when you’re making excuses. When you make excuses, you’re ripping yourself off.
  2. Clarity - Explore what you want in life and if it isn't clear after five minutes, start writing what you don't want. When you know what you don't want, what you want becomes more clear.  If you’re still unsure, put yourself first, create some time and space, get a journal and start writing.
  3. Take Action - The universe responds to the energy of taking action. Actions create new experiences, and that brings in more opportunities. As soon as you take the first step, it starts to create the opportunities.
  4. Future Pace Yourself - If you were at the end of your life, what would you have regretted not doing, and how will you know you’ve lived a fulfilled life?

"There’s no past, there’s no future there are just never-ending moments of NOW. You can’t change the past but what can you do is take action NOW".

Final Tip

As the business leader, you should be showing up for yourself, not showing up for the team. You need to be your best self first before you can be the best leader for your team.

Ep 170 (UNCUT): AFL Draft to Podiatry with Jay Lewis

Jay Lewis is the owner of Elite Foot Care on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. Jay gained an interest in Podiatry while playing AFL as a scholarship holder with the Sydney Swans.

Being in an elite level sports environment provided a great level of insight and interest into sports biomechanics, lower limb injuries and performance enhancement. This elite environment also introduced him to leadership at the highest level.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • The commitment needed as a New South Welshman to break into the AFL.
  • Being around elite players and a professional environment.
  • Accountability and team culture.
  • Being in a competitive environment.
  • What he learnt in Speed School.
  • Leadership and goals setting.
  • Life after being cut from the team.
  • Taking what he learnt in an elite environment and applying it to his podiatry career.

"Although you're an individual, you never get success without the team; you can never do it all on your own. We worked for each other, and if one person is doing well and one is not, you're not doing well as a team".

Final Tip

What's hard now will be easy later if you put in the work and surround yourself with a good team, and your team needs to be constantly growing. Team culture is king.
