102 - Dr Cam Wareham The Harder You Work, The Luckier You Get

Dr Cam Wareham has worked in the area of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery for over 25 years, and he has worked across three countries, New Zealand, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

His career started in MSK and sports podiatry in Canberra, and even though he did enjoy it, he could not kick the bug and excitement of becoming a podiatric surgeon.

He honed his craft in the National Health Service in the UK, and even though some podiatrists would say he has been lucky, I would say when you work 60 - 70 hours per week for multiple years luck is not a factor.

On this episode we also discuss:

  • Why he moved to the UK and worked in the NHS
  • Chasing the surgery dream
  • By working long hours, you make your own luck.
  • Why you sometimes need to buy a round of drinks
  • We’re not medical practitioners, but we are medically-trained
  • Changing your mindset - You are an educated practitioner.
  • Why you are not just a podiatrist. You would never hear a dentist never say I’m just a dentist
  • Empowering the podiatry profession
  • Medical law - A patients idiocy is only part of your defence

"There’s something about keeping your patients close and keeping the ones with complications even closer".

Final Tip

When you see new advances in Podiatric Medicine never stop learning and embrace everything you can. You may not need it today, but tomorrow it could change your practice.

If we stand still, we go backwards, so embrace the idea of improving your skillset.

101 - David Mullens is The Podiatrist Who Became A Kick-Ass Attorney

David Mullens is a Podiatric Surgeon and Californian health care attorney. On this episode, we cover some simple tactics every podiatrist should be using to protect themselves from insurance companies, and also how to avoid getting taken to the cleaners legally.

All podiatrists, regardless of country, face similar legal issues, and it's essential to understand how to validate your treatment.

Four Questions When Charting

  1. What was wrong with the patient
  2. What did you do?
  3. Why did you do it?
  4. What are you going to do?

Take Photos

When patients problems are visual, you should be taking before and after photos and storing them in the cloud for future use, if needed.

File each photo using the patients' initials, the date and insurance number if you have it.

Overservicing

Most podiatrists are cheating themselves by under-utilising item numbers/codes because they have a fear of insurance company audits.

Did you know many insurance companies have a room full of lawyers and health professionals on their payroll to try and intimidate you?

If you can justify your treatment, don't be concerned if you're using an item number/code more than your peers, it may be a reflection of the type of services and treatment you offer.

Final Tip

Don't do things that you know are over your head. No one has ever got in trouble for referring a patient to someone more skilled in a particular area.
