248 - BOOK REVIEW: The Practice by Seth Godin

Welcome to our first monthly book review episode. On this episode, I am joined by my podiatry friend and avid book reader, Carly O'Donoghue, and we could not think of a more fitting book to kick off our joint venture than Seth Godin's The Practice: Shipping Creative Work.

Neither of us could put this book down once we started, and it will definitely change the way you approach each day.

We plan to read a new book every month, and then we will share two or three of our biggest takeaways that we feel will be most helpful to our listeners and entice you to grab a copy yourself.

This episode is sponsored by Podiatry Clinic Websites.

You can order The Practice: Shipping Creative Work below.

247 - Volunteering in South America with David Karamanis

David Karamanis is an Australian podiatrist who had the vision to travel to high-risk developing countries to provide podiatry service to communities that cannot easily access it. To fulfil this vision, he decided to travel and volunteer his time in South America. When I spoke with David, he was in Ecuador.

He has a website, www.thetravelingpod.com, where he uploads photos of the people and communities he is helping. You can make donations via his website if you’d like to help support his efforts. I HAVE

In this episode, we discuss the following:

  • Working in a podiatry clinic was not ticking all the boxes; something was missing, and even though it was a good job, a Ted Talk made him realise his true calling.
  • When his boss told him that one day if he worked hard, he could have a business just like his, and why David told him there was no way he wanted his lifestyle. He was so busy he could take holidays.
  • When he realised that helping people function better was his thing, and a lot of his work in South America has been biomechanically based.
  • At 50, David would rather be rich with experiences than have money and property.
  • His passion for podiatry has grown since living in South America. It has opened his eyes.
  • The Pizza Challenge to help orphanages and children who live on the streets because they always miss out.

“What do you do that excites you that much you forget to eat? That’s what you should be doing more of.”

Final Tip

I encourage you to investigate yourself and look at the ideas and deep desires you’ve always had, but you’ve pushed aside because of family and other commitments.

Just because you work as a podiatrist, you’re not just a podiatrist. Look deeper.

246 - Being A Diabetic Helped Me Empathise with My Patients with Dr David Farnen, DPM.

Dr David Farnen is the co-owner of Cutting Edge Foot and Ankle Clinic in Nashville, Tennessee.

Today, we're going to discuss his career, business ownership, and how being diagnosed with rare, delayed onset, type-1 diabetes at the ripe old age of twenty-three was initially devastating for his career; however, it is now an asset, making him more empathetic to his patients.

We also discuss the following:

  • Why Nashville is a fantastic city with true southern comfort, hospitality, food and music.
  • The multifaceted aspects of podiatry.
  • The stress of being asked if he was a drug addict before his diabetes diagnosis.
  • How depression after the diagnosis forced him to leave the residency program and his thoughts around very few colleagues reaching out to see if he was okay.
  • He felt embarrassed and didn't want to tell anyone other than his family.
  • How it has helped him empathise with his patients.
  • Why they expanded to five (5) locations around the city of Nashville
  • The power and benefits of Social Media and why we should embrace it. If you want to connect with Dave, you'll find him on Instagram @itsdrdavedpm.

"Patients want to know more about YOU as a person because they can use Google for their foot problems".

Final Tip - Treat everybody as though they're family, and BE NICE.

245 - Focus On Your Wins, Not Your Losses with Dr Jesse Green

Dr Jesse Green is no stranger to the Podiatry Legends Podcast. He has been a guest on episodes 144 and 200, and I've asked him to come back to talk about why people focus so much on their losses and not enough on their wins.

Dr Jesse Green runs Practice Max, one of Australia's largest Dental Coaching Organisations and hosts the Savvy Dentist Podcast. This episode is a dual episode that Jesse and I decided to use on both shows.

In this episode, we discuss the following:

  • A new word - PISSOFFEDNESS
  • Why do we over-value our losses in life yet undervalue our day-to-day wins?
  • The reason people keep on hanging on to losses is that they don't want to admit that they've made a mistake. And it will hold them back from making the next decision!
  • A good decision can still lead to a poor outcome. So what can you do in this situation?
  • Expect that some of your decisions will be wrong the further you try to predict the outcome. What will happen in a week is much easier than what will happen in twelve months.
  • CAPACITY PLANNING - Using numbers to make your decisions based on past decisions and future predictions. You're working on the balance of probability.
  • So if you've had a few things go wrong and are a little bit 'gun-shy', what can you do to get back to making decisions and moving towards more wins?
  • Remember, every big business you know of today … once started as a 'small' business. And every big business still makes mistakes as the company grows larger.
  • When things go wrong, instead of just saying I knew that was going to happen and not learning from it, document what you learned in a BRAIN BOOK or journal and then use this information in the future.
  • The people who do well in their business practice over-value their wins and under-value their losses as a general habit.
  • MATHEMATICAL FORMULA FOR SERENDIPITY - More Swings = More Hits.
  • The longer you take to start something, the less chance you have of actually doing it.

5 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Discount Your Prices to Attract New Patients

In this video, I will explain my five top reasons why discounting is one of the worst marketing strategies you can implement if you want to attract new patients to your business. 244 - The Gait Movement with Estelle Humphris

Estelle Humphris is a South Australian podiatrist who took up positions in country health, wound care and routine podiatry upon graduation. As time passed, she felt her knowledge of biomechanics and gait was slowly slipping away.

When she asked for help from senior mentors, she felt they were overwhelmed by the enormity of the subject and were unclear on where to start. Mentors told her to watch people walk in her local shopping mall and watch every client in the clinic.

Estelle wasn't satisfied with this and made it her personal goal to work on her gait analysis skills and constantly ask her seniors questions on specific cases.

She then thought: "how good would it be if she could put everything she had learnt into one resource for herself and others to reflect and learn from"...and so The Gait Movement online course was born.

What else did we discuss on this episode:

  • Taking a Gap Year between years two and three and living in Germany.
  • Discovering she was Dyslexic in her third year and understanding why she had to work so much harder than everyone else.
  • Modifying how she learns.
  • Being scared to ask questions as a new graduate and not wanting to be seen as stupid.
  • How close she got to leaving podiatry.
  • Imposter syndrome.

Estelle used to find initial consultations created a lot of anxiety because she didn't know what foot problem would come through the door until she learnt that all she needed to do was get through the first appointment. After the first appointment, she had time to prepare for the review appointment.

The Gait Movement Online Course is designed for new and recent graduates or podiatrists who may have lost some of their biomechanical and gait analysis skills. To learn more, visit her website www.thegaitmovement.com.au.

You can also connect with Estelle on Instagram, Facebook and Linkedin at The Gait Movement.

Final Tip - Don't be scared to ask questions, and know that you're not alone.
