303 - Storybrand Websites with Tom Foster


Tom Foster from Foster Web Marketing joins me on this podcast to discuss the thinking behind Storybrand Websites and why podiatrists should embrace this way of marketing their practices. It's about making the patient the hero, not the podiatrist. 

Podiatrists often complain on social media about The Good Feet Store or other companies because of their orthotic marketing. However, if every podiatrist embraced marketing through their websites, there would be no issue; podiatry would dominate the market. Patients would consider podiatry before heading to other companies and professions for foot problems. 

"Your website is your best marketing vehicle for making money, and if you do it right, it will bring you tons of new patients".

The process is quite simple:

  1. Attract patients with excellent website content and SEO. 
  2. Once they're on your website, convert them to an appointment or give them further information in exchange for their email address. 
  3. When you have their email address, you should market to them. 

We also discuss:

  • Using Google and YouTube searches for topics. 
  • Refining your perfect patient and creating content for them, and only them. Make your content specific. 
  • Making your patient the hero of the story. 
  • Building a Storybrand. 
  • Creating a "Foot Freedom Plan". 
  • Write about what the patient wants, not what you do.
  • Giving patients a simple plan to follow. 
  • Your homepage is a brand page; therefore, it needs less text. Your internal pages, however, need more text and need to be optimised. 
  • The power of stories: Use examples of patients with similar problems and how they overcame the problem and were able to do what they wanted to do, pain-free, by following the foot freedom plan you developed.

302 - USA 2023 My Travel Takeaways


When I travel, I like to travel with intent, meaning I like to have fun, but at the same time, I want to learn something new each day, so I intentionally look for it.

This year, on my USA trip, I had three stops. My first stop was in Tempe, Arizona, to attend my favourite event of the year, Dave Frees Business Black Ops. My next stop was Nashville, Tennesee, to catch up with my friend Jeff Petersen and stay at his music studio, Interstate Music. My final destination was Chicago to run a podiatry marketing workshop and attend my first NFL game (Chicago Bears V Las Vegas Raiders).

In summary, it was a trip full of unexpected ups and downs, but in hindsight, those ups and downs made the trip memorable and gave me many personal takeaways.

The Podiatry Evolution


Over time, every podiatry business needs to evolve into something special instead of just becoming a bigger version of what it once was. 

When you first open your business, you are prepared to see just about anyone because you have bills to pay, and you need to have a roof over your head, which is why you will visit nursing homes and hostels, do home visits and see every routine patient.

But, as your business evolves, you need to let go of some of this work and let the new podiatrists in town have it, which will free up your time to see better patients.

A patient with a complex problem should be seeing the more experienced podiatrist, but they can't if you're booked out three or four weeks ahead, so instead, they will see the new podiatrist, the less experienced one.

Over time, while you're wearing your badge of honour of being busy and booked out, the new podiatrist will grow their business with better patients, and they will do it faster than all the existing podiatrists in town.

298 - From Cane Farm to Foot Care with Rebecca Eakins


Rebecca Eakins, from Buderim Foot & Ankle on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, is one of the most inspirational podiatrists I've had the pleasure of interviewing. After graduating with degrees in podiatry and exercise physiology from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), she worked on the Sunshine Coast before eventually moving back to her North Queensland hometown of Ayr to be closer to family.

Several years later, Rebecca returned to the Sunshine Coast to open her in early 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Through perseverance and community involvement, Rebecca overcame the challenges of opening during COVID-19 to establish a thriving clinic. She enjoys helping everyone, from children to athletes, maximize their health through podiatry. Rebecca's story shows that you can achieve your dreams even in the face of adversity with passion and grit.

297 - The Benefit of Early Career Wins with Cameron Bennet


Cameron Bennet is the owner of My Family Podiatry, a private practice on the north side of Brisbane, and he is passionate about providing the highest level of patient care and elevating the standard of the treatment supplied by podiatrists.

He initially worked in Tasmania and Brisbane for a big corporate company, which was great because he always knew he wanted to have his own business and thought this was the best way to gain experience as a podiatrist and seeing how a podiatry business was managed before heading out on his own. 

In this episode, we cover:

  • Why new graduates underestimate their abilities early on in their careers. 
  • Starting small and limiting your overheads when you first start your business.  
  • Getting out there and educating referrers and the general public. 
  • Employment mistakes. It's essential to get the right person that fits your team. 
  • Having enough confidence to have a crack and not give up too early when treating patients. 
  • Imposter syndrome and how it impacts our perception of ourselves in the healthcare arena. Our scope of practice far exceeds other allied health professionals. 
  • The dirty 'S' word - Sales. 
  • The importance of sales and sales scripts in healthcare. Sales scripts help to overcome feelings of doubt. 
  • Some podiatrists don't like the word sales, but if you're rebooking patients, you're selling.
  • Building confidence through small wins.  
  • Delivering confident treatment plans and transferring that to your patients with planned treatment pathways.

294 - Saving Limbs Lives in India with Dr Sanjay Sharma


In this episode, I  reconnect with Dr. Sanjay Sharma, a pioneering podiatrist revolutionising podiatry and foot care in India. Since appearing on the show three years ago, in 2020, Episode 103, Dr Sharma has established Foot Secure, a network of clinics providing complete podiatry services across Bangalore.

Sanjay and his team treat up to 200 patients at their five locations daily, focusing on diabetes-related foot complications. Through early detection and intervention, Foot Secure has reduced below-knee and bony amputation rates to just 2.7%, a dramatic decrease from India's average of 19% across all hospitals.

Mark Caldwell is the owner of Feetology in Victoria Point, Brisbane, and over the past twenty-plus years, he has honed his skills as a podiatrist, business owner and mentor.
