189 - Podiatry & Physio Synergy with Luke & Lauren Bertram

Luke and Lauren Bertram are the co-owners of Physiopod, Podiatry & Physiotherapy Geelong. Luke is a podiatrist, and his wife Lauren is a physiotherapist, and together they have created a professional working synergy based on open communication and ongoing education.

They both agree they have learnt a tremendous amount from each other, which has led to improved patient treatment outcomes.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Their working history: Luke spent several years in the UK while Lauren worked with the Australian Winter Olympic Team.
  • Booking the patients in for the right practitioner.
  • The Collective Body Consult, it's brilliant.
  • Having a genuine interest in each other professions has made them better communicators with their patients because they ask better questions.
  • Ankle ROM and Incontinence.
  • The difference between Multidisciplinary and Interdisciplinary patient care. They are not the same.
  • How they marketed their services together.
  • Developing relationships and opening lines of communication will increase your referrals.

Final Tip

If you're working with a physiotherapist, make them aware of what you like to treat or have a particular interest in. You may find it's an area they don't want to treat, and they may be unaware you can help in this area.

Who Are Your Favourite Patients?

In the Podiatry Business Owners Club on Facebook I asked the following question:

When you think about your favourite patients, what is it that makes them your favourites?

I was not surprised by the comments this Facebook post attracted, because they were pretty much in line with the traits and mannerisms I used to enjoy most about my patients.

188 - Cecilia Brennan 10 Things I Love About Podiatry

Cecilia Brennan is the owner of New Step Podiatry in Canberra, the spirited national capital of Australia. After a decade in the profession, Cecilia decided to write a reflective article on her career to date.

I came across her article, 10 Things I Love about Podiatry, on Linkedin and thought I needed to share this information with the rest of the profession.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Betting on yourself.
  • Learning which parts of podiatry you like.
  • Having a business vision - To bring more joy to every step.
  • Keeping yourself and your team on track with your business vision.
  • Employing people in alignment with your business vision, mission and values.
  • 10 Things I Love About Podiatry:
    1. The range of care.
    2. Range of clients.
    3. Strong connections with our patients.
    4. An evolving profession.
    5. Use emerging technologies.
    6. Instant results.
    7. Hands-on care.
    8. Our jobs are totally underrated.
    9. Choice of working in the private or public sector and beyond.
    10. No shift work or late nights.

Final Tip:

Work on your communication skills. You need to learn how to listen, when to be directive with your language and when to be collaborative.

You need to avoid wishy-washy language, you need to be clear, and you need to know you are the expert in that room, and you need to communicate that with your patients.
