014 - Josh Truscott The Ultimate Podiatrist & CPD Made Easy

To become a better podiatrist you cannot underestimate the value of ongoing education, and as part of our registration requirements you must be involved in continuing professional development, CPD, but living in rural areas do not always make this easy compared to our city counterparts. Josh Truscott, the owner of The Ultimate Podiatrist, makes CPD easy for podiatrists in both Australia and the UK and helps take away the pain of compliance with registration boards.

Josh Truscott graduated from Latrobe University in 1998 and travelled and worked for a few years in Canada and the UK before settling down in private practice in Tasmania and eventually Bowral, NSW.

On this episode we discuss:

1:02 - CPD in Australia and the UK, and the obstacles rural podiatrists face with educating because of travel and time.

"The more you study and the more practice the more you realise you don't know"

6:00 - Working overseas after graduation.

9:30 - The transition from an employee to a business owner and eventually starting The Ultimate Podiatrist

12:35 - Selling his Bowral podiatry business and benefits of going fulltime with The Ultimate Podiatrist.

14:20 - The Ultimate Podiatrist has developed different types of learnings activities. For example, Expert Presentations Modules are webinars shown ten times per year and presented by experts in the podiatry profession. Simon Bartold, episode 04 was the first expert presenter.

Webinar Schedule

Webinars are usually run on the first Monday of each month, February - November, and recorded. To date, there are 25 recorded versions in the archives. After a podiatrist watches a webinar and completes a short quiz, a certificate is generated for proof of CPD compliance.

17:20 - Membership categories: Monthly and yearly subscriptions or you can pay per module.

20:15 - Josh runs additional events throughout the year himself, and also some events are joint ventures.

22:45 - Finding something you enjoy and your good at and pursue this interest.

27:20 - What's next? A career development program /personal coaching.

29:00 - Benefits of looking for a mentor and talking with more experienced podiatrists.

30:05 - Vital Few and Trivial Many. The Podiatry Gods

32:35 - Content is relevant to all podiatrists, but tracks are specific to each country, so US Podiatrists would also benefit.

34:30 - Josh is always looking for people to collaborate with so if you have a course or workshop contact him at josh@ultimatepodiatrist.com.au or via his websites:

013 - Dianne Ashcroft Lessons Learnt After 300+ Videos

Shooting videos for your podiatry business become so much easier when you stop worrying about what other people think and just get on with sharing what you know. Dianne Ashcroft from Warrington, England and owner of Lane Ends Podiatry has shot more than 300 plus videos for her podiatry business, and she admits the hardest video to shoot was video number one.
However, after shooting and posting her first video Dianne realised she didn't die, so she just kept doing them because she understood the value they held for her podiatry business and patients.
Be Relatable
The easiest way to relate to someone is just to be yourself, so when you're shooting videos don't try and be something you're not. Be authentic.
Yes, some patients will not like what you create. They will deselect themselves if they do not enjoy your videos, which is great.
Don't Worry About Opinions
Don't allow yourself to get held back by someone else's opinion. If they don't like your videos, no one is forcing them to watch, but if one person watches it and gets something out of it, it was worth doing.
15 or 15000 Views
It's not about how many views you get, 15 or 15000, or the number of positive comments you receive, it's about sharing what you know and waiting to see who you help.
Who cares if you get a few thumbs down. They're not your market.
Where Do You Get Your Ideas?
Not a lot of thought or planning goes into Dianne's videos. If an idea pops into her head, she picks up her phone and starts recording. It's that simple.
It's not about having perfect hair, clothing, lighting or being in the right mood; it's about being spontaneous and understanding you need to be you. That will attract people.
Use personal stories, interests and even your challenges.
Make Your Videos and Post Personal
Dianne decided to create Weigh-In-Wednesday, and she used her own weight loss goal for the weekly posts. When you put yourself out there to your patients, that's accountability.
What holds us back is this fear of what people will think of us. Ask yourself, what's the worse that can happen? Don't be afraid to share your interests.
Share Now, Not Later
Don't wait to share what you know. If you wait another year to share your podiatry knowledge, that's one more year where people could have benefited from your experience.
It's not fair not to share what you know. You owe it to your patients to share your thoughts and ideas.
You Will Be Five Years Older Regardless
Dianne didn't start podiatry as a career until she was 27 years of age and realised you're never too old to start pursuing what your interests.

Put in the time and effort now, because in five years you're still going to be five years older. If there's an area of podiatry you want to get better in, there's no better time than now to get started. Stop putting it off.
"If you want something to change you've got to do something to make the change happen".
Learn From Nick Knight
If there's a specific area of podiatry you want to pursue, be like Nick Knight (Episode 011) and pursue it 100%. Nick Knight wanted to do Musculoskeletal & Sports Podiatry, and that's what he did, but he had to put in the work.
"When you see someone doing something you want to do, it means it is doable".
Becoming interested in one area of podiatry is a great way to niche your business, and it also saves a lot of money when it comes to marketing.
No Regrets
You don't want to be ninety-five years of age and have regrets for not doing something you always wanted to do. Fear can hold you back, but you've got to learn to get out of your own way.
"Stop worrying about what other people think".
Dream Bigger
We can afford to dream even bigger now because of technology. How we communicate with each other, and our patients have changed so much over the past ten years.
Technology is there for the taking, and if you don't take the opportunity, you've only got yourself to blame. Using videos to promote your podiatry business and your brand is just one piece of technology that is available to everybody.
The Pods Heal Heel Campaign
This campaign was all about podiatrists working together to share a universal message about podiatry, consistently over three weeks and it paid big dividends for everyone involved and also for the profession.
"You must get out of the mindset that every podiatrist is a competitor; they're not."

012 - Jennie Thompson The Foodie Podiatrist

The podiatry profession offers so many opportunities and my guest, Jennie Thompson from Sydney, who has been practising podiatry for 37 years, is a Clinical Educator at the University of Newcastle and a mad foodie has proven you can run a successful podiatry business and also chase your passions outside of podiatry.

On this podcast episode we discuss:

1:25 - The benefits of being passionate about things outside of podiatry

3:35 - The reality of running a podiatry business. No one teaches us how to run a business, so we must search for information.

6:15 - The beneficial effects of connecting people.

7:10 - Working on the business, not in the business.

7:35 - As a business owner it can be incredibly lonely. Therefore it's a good idea to meet up with like-minded people and talk about your problems openly and together find solutions.

10:15 - How Jennie brought her passion for food into her podiatry business.

10:55 - How cooking relates to running a business and a team. They both have ingredients.

12:10 - Too many podiatrists work in silos. We should be working closely with other health professionals.

13:30 - The importance of learning the basics of podiatry and how it relates to treatment protocols.

15:00 - How did Jennie know it was time to sell her clinic and pursue other interests?

"Get business advice early in your career so you're not being chased by fear".

17:00 - A well-run business will give you time back.

18:20 - Why working for yourself immediately upon graduation is not the best idea.

  • Learn from others mistakes
  • Check out other clinics during your holidays
  • Enjoy your holidays for two years
  • Then decide if you want to work for yourself

20:15 - The benefits of having a mentor.

"Enjoy yourself. You've only got one life so enjoy the day".

Monday Morning Tip

Be kind, because it always works.

011 - Nick Knight We All Benefit By Working Together

Nick Knight is the owner of NK Sports Podiatry based in the south of England. His business focus is on rehabilitation, gait analysis and orthoses, and he is on a mission to help the podiatry profession grow. Nick believes that all podiatrists benefit when they work together, not in opposition to one another.

On this episode we discuss:

4:10 - His journey into podiatry. Initially he was headed towards a military career, then physiotherapy, only because he did not know what a podiatrist was, but as soon as he did, he was always going to be a podiatrist.

7:12 - From day one Nick knew he wanted to go into the sports and musculoskeletal aspects of podiatry

9:30 - Being involved in the 2012 Para-Olympics lead to first job in a private clinic with Trevor Prior.

12:25 - Being a sports person is not about your age, it's about being active. NK Sports Podiatry motto, "Get Active, Stay Active"

14:20 - Your business name is important but your brand that you attach to it is far more important.

15:12 - Get out to sporting events and offer your services this is the best way to learn and to be seen. To improve your education use your holidays and visit other podiatry businesses.

"There is no set educational path to learn more about sports podiatry, so set your own path"

18:50 - Being involved in sports builds understanding.

It's important to be active yourself if you want to work with sportspeople. You don't have to perform at the same level as your patients, but it helps you understand their thinking, the struggles they go through and you will have more empathy.

21:50 - ANATOMY WORKSHOPS: With Emma Cowley and Tony Gavin from OSGO. Monday 8th July Southhampton

24:40 - Foot & Ankle Show

27:25 - Benefits of doing research in his own clinic and developing his own data.
