303 - Storybrand Websites with Tom Foster


Tom Foster from Foster Web Marketing joins me on this podcast to discuss the thinking behind Storybrand Websites and why podiatrists should embrace this way of marketing their practices. It's about making the patient the hero, not the podiatrist. 

Podiatrists often complain on social media about The Good Feet Store or other companies because of their orthotic marketing. However, if every podiatrist embraced marketing through their websites, there would be no issue; podiatry would dominate the market. Patients would consider podiatry before heading to other companies and professions for foot problems. 

"Your website is your best marketing vehicle for making money, and if you do it right, it will bring you tons of new patients".

The process is quite simple:

  1. Attract patients with excellent website content and SEO. 
  2. Once they're on your website, convert them to an appointment or give them further information in exchange for their email address. 
  3. When you have their email address, you should market to them. 

We also discuss:

  • Using Google and YouTube searches for topics. 
  • Refining your perfect patient and creating content for them, and only them. Make your content specific. 
  • Making your patient the hero of the story. 
  • Building a Storybrand. 
  • Creating a "Foot Freedom Plan". 
  • Write about what the patient wants, not what you do.
  • Giving patients a simple plan to follow. 
  • Your homepage is a brand page; therefore, it needs less text. Your internal pages, however, need more text and need to be optimised. 
  • The power of stories: Use examples of patients with similar problems and how they overcame the problem and were able to do what they wanted to do, pain-free, by following the foot freedom plan you developed.

302 - USA 2023 My Travel Takeaways


When I travel, I like to travel with intent, meaning I like to have fun, but at the same time, I want to learn something new each day, so I intentionally look for it.

This year, on my USA trip, I had three stops. My first stop was in Tempe, Arizona, to attend my favourite event of the year, Dave Frees Business Black Ops. My next stop was Nashville, Tennesee, to catch up with my friend Jeff Petersen and stay at his music studio, Interstate Music. My final destination was Chicago to run a podiatry marketing workshop and attend my first NFL game (Chicago Bears V Las Vegas Raiders).

In summary, it was a trip full of unexpected ups and downs, but in hindsight, those ups and downs made the trip memorable and gave me many personal takeaways.

The Podiatry Evolution


Over time, every podiatry business needs to evolve into something special instead of just becoming a bigger version of what it once was. 

When you first open your business, you are prepared to see just about anyone because you have bills to pay, and you need to have a roof over your head, which is why you will visit nursing homes and hostels, do home visits and see every routine patient.

But, as your business evolves, you need to let go of some of this work and let the new podiatrists in town have it, which will free up your time to see better patients.

A patient with a complex problem should be seeing the more experienced podiatrist, but they can't if you're booked out three or four weeks ahead, so instead, they will see the new podiatrist, the less experienced one.

Over time, while you're wearing your badge of honour of being busy and booked out, the new podiatrist will grow their business with better patients, and they will do it faster than all the existing podiatrists in town.

300 - How I Established A 100 Biomech Clinic with Hayley Paterson


This milestone 300th episode of Podiatry Legends features host Tyson Franklin and guest Hayley Paterson of Foundation Podiatry in Townsville, Queensland. Hayley traces her inspirational 19-year journey from a new graduate to a successful business and clinic owner. 

We learn how she initially worked with Tyson in Cairns because she wanted to work in Regional Queensland; then, after two years and with his guidance, Hayley set up her own podiatry business and, after several years, eventually found her niche in biomechanics. 

Hayley shares the ups and downs of business ownership, building her team, mentoring new podiatrists, and staying resilient when things do not always go to plan. Haley proves that you can create a successful business on your own terms with passion and perseverance.

Even with all her business success, Hayley still considers herself a born practitioner and less of a business owner, so she can struggle to wear both hats.
