173 - Dr Misty McNeill When to Start, When to Sell

When is the right time to transition from an employee to a business owner? And more importantly, when is it the right time to sell?

It's going to be different for everyone, and my guest, Dr Misty McNeill from Prairie Path Foot & Ankle Clinic in Elmhurst, Illinois, shares her unique story of transitioning through these three stages and what she learnt along the way.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Her big WHY.
  • With business ownership, there are tradeoffs.
  • The enormous long-term benefits of spending less than you make.
  • Debt creates pressure, and pressure can make you do things that don't align with your values. Do not become a slave to debt.
  • Creating a flexible work environment.
  • Attracting podiatrists looking for the same lifestyle.
  • WHY did she sell and choose to become an employee again?

"I became an owner so I could have time for myself, but now I want not to be the owner so I can have time for myself."

Final Tip:

Live within your means, and be clear about what serves you. If it's not a definite YES, then it's a NO.

172 - Dr Misty McNeill Learning from Disney

This episode is not what I initially set out to produce, but I'm so glad the first 20-minutes of my conversation with Dr Misty McNeill from Prairie Path Foot & Ankle Clinic in Elmhurst, Illinois, took a deviation from the original topic.

Dr Misty McNeill was invited onto the podcast to discuss her transition from employee to business owner and then from business owner to employee. It's a great story, and we did discuss it, but only after talking about our love and learnings from Disney first.

Because these two topics are vastly different, I thought they each deserved a separate episode, so this week's episode is about Learning from Disney and next week, you'll get the story behind Dr McNeill's career.

Topics Discussed:

  • Creating raving fans
  • Disney refers to all employees as Cast Members because everyone plays a part in the success of Disney.
  • Disney treats their cast members so well; it trickles down to the customers.
  • All trainees wear a badge that says Earning My Ears. At Misty's podiatry business, her trainees wear a badge that says Taking My First Steps
  • Disney makes waiting in line fun.
  • Disney sets standards that apply to everyone in the company, even the bosses.
  • Book recommendation: Be Our Guest

Ep 171 - Deb Johnstone Showing Up For Yourself

Episode 171 - Deb Johnstone from Transformational Pathways Australia will explain WHY you need to be showing up for yourself daily and HOW it creates new business opportunities that would have otherwise be missed or overlooked.

171 - Deb Johnstone Showing Up For Yourself

Deb Johnstone from Transformational Pathways Australia will explain WHY you need to be showing up for yourself daily and HOW it creates new business opportunities that would have otherwise be missed or overlooked.

Deb has been on the Podiatry Legends Podcast before, Episode 89: My Mindset Coach.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • The importance of making a commitment to ourselves.
  • Understanding where certain behaviours lead you.
  • The difference between showing up and showing up fully.
  • The importance of being aware when you're not showing up.
  • Language creates your reality, and using the wrong language can lead to missed opportunities. For example;
    • I’m too busy - means you're putting your time elsewhere.
    • I can’t afford it  - it means you're spending your money on something else.
  • Ongoing personal development and health are significant, but they are two common areas of life where people often don't show up for themselves.
  • Showing up for yourself is about putting yourself first; it’s not about being selfish. It's about allowing time for you.

Four essential steps to show up for yourself:

  1. Being Aware - You need to have an awareness of when you’re making excuses. When you make excuses, you’re ripping yourself off.
  2. Clarity - Explore what you want in life and if it isn't clear after five minutes, start writing what you don't want. When you know what you don't want, what you want becomes more clear.  If you’re still unsure, put yourself first, create some time and space, get a journal and start writing.
  3. Take Action - The universe responds to the energy of taking action. Actions create new experiences, and that brings in more opportunities. As soon as you take the first step, it starts to create the opportunities.
  4. Future Pace Yourself - If you were at the end of your life, what would you have regretted not doing, and how will you know you’ve lived a fulfilled life?

"There’s no past, there’s no future there are just never-ending moments of NOW. You can’t change the past but what can you do is take action NOW".

Final Tip

As the business leader, you should be showing up for yourself, not showing up for the team. You need to be your best self first before you can be the best leader for your team.

Ep 170 (UNCUT): AFL Draft to Podiatry with Jay Lewis

Jay Lewis is the owner of Elite Foot Care on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. Jay gained an interest in Podiatry while playing AFL as a scholarship holder with the Sydney Swans.

Being in an elite level sports environment provided a great level of insight and interest into sports biomechanics, lower limb injuries and performance enhancement. This elite environment also introduced him to leadership at the highest level.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • The commitment needed as a New South Welshman to break into the AFL.
  • Being around elite players and a professional environment.
  • Accountability and team culture.
  • Being in a competitive environment.
  • What he learnt in Speed School.
  • Leadership and goals setting.
  • Life after being cut from the team.
  • Taking what he learnt in an elite environment and applying it to his podiatry career.

"Although you're an individual, you never get success without the team; you can never do it all on your own. We worked for each other, and if one person is doing well and one is not, you're not doing well as a team".

Final Tip

What's hard now will be easy later if you put in the work and surround yourself with a good team, and your team needs to be constantly growing. Team culture is king.
