089 - Deb Johnstone Is My Mindset Coach

Every month I like to share a legend who is not a podiatrist. On this episode, I want to introduce you to my Mindset Coach, the person who has helped me keep my head screwed on and focused on the tasks that matter most, Deb Johnstone, from Transformational Pathways Australia.

If you want a thriving podiatry business or career, I believe you will do it faster by having a podiatry business coach to help with marketing, systems, teamwork and diary management. However, it all begins by having a positive mindset.

On this episode we discuss:

  • Common mindset obstacles and blocks
  • Lacking in confidence
  • Why fear may present as stress, anxiety, or denial
  • Procrastination: we do tend to do things that feel the easiest and put off things that create discomfort or boredom.
  • Pain Pleasure Model
  • Fear of Success: With success, there comes a lot more responsibility, and we start to stand out. Fear can lead to a fear of being judged by others.
  • Building believe and confidence

Final Tip

What goes on in our subconscious mind can trip us up. Anything is possible when we explore what is holding us back.

If you have any questions after listening to this episode, please send me an email at tf@tysonfranklin.com

Podiatry Business Coaching & Mentoring

If you want to own and operate a Thriving Podiatry Business, you've got to work on four specific areas of your business.

  • Marketing - You need to have a proper, well thought out strategy
  • Systems - You need systems that will support both your marketing and your team.
  • Team - You need to develop a culture that makes your life easier, not harder
  • Diary - This is the backbone. Your diary needs to be structured in a way that maximises patient number per day and in turn, will increase your daily profits.

Thinking you can just work on one part or maybe two out of four areas and still do well is no longer good enough, you must develop all four pieces of the business puzzle.

087 - John Guiliana Clinical Benefits of Lower Patient Volumes

Dr John Guiliana has had a unique career path, moving from Pharmacy to Podiatry and eventually into Healthcare Management with NEMO Health.

Right now, during COVID-19, he has been assisting podiatry business owners across North America to move through the Fear, Learning and Growth Zones, and helping them understand how they can have lower patient volumes, yet still, enjoy improved profits.

On this episode we discuss:

  • How a D+ student found his intellectual groove
  • Why he decided to leave Pharmacy and become a Podiatrist
  • Nemo Health - A Practice Improvement Company

COVID-19

Covid-19 has affected everybody, on both a business and personal perspective, and it has been global.

Fear, Learning & Growth Zones

During this pandemic, it's essential to get out of the Fear Zone, move through the Learning Zone, and eventually get into the Growth Zone

You need to learn how to maintain profitability in your business with lower patient volumes, and some podiatrists will come out of the pandemic in a better than when they went in.

It's about learning to do more with less.

Why is there is a low patient volume?

Patients are also going through the three zones of fear, learning and growth.

There is also the Paradox of Thrift - which occurs when you have people that have been economically hurt, and because of this, they become more thrifty with where and when they spend their money.

Cash flow is the key right now for every business. Getting paid faster and being more careful where you spend your money, only then can you work on profits.

"The actions you take right now are going to help you with the long-term profitability of your business."

Action Steps with Lower Patient Volumes

  • Spend time reinventing your practice:
    • Go through your policy and procedure manuals.
    • Engage and collaborate with your staff and be a leader, and remove those team members that will not change.
  • Look at your clinical protocols: You need to increase your PVR - Per visit Revenue.
    • This is why lower patient volume will help increase long-term revenue because of the more thorough patient and evidence-based protocols.
    • These will well offset lower patient volumes.
    • Focus on what you enjoy doing. Get rid of the things they don't like to do.
  • Looking beyond the chief complaint: What other treatment or service can you ethically provide.
    • Dentists have been doing this forever. They explain things you cannot see
    • Does your patient with an ingrown toenail have bunions or chronic knee pain? Creating Care Plans results in better patient outcomes and higher PVR.

Final Tip

Search for lessons learned. And the #1 lesson learned from this pandemic is the importance of liquidity. You need to have six to nine months of cash reserves for the next economic crisis.

If you have any questions after listening to this episode, please send me an email at tf@tysonfranklin.com, or you can reach out to John at john@nemohealth.com

086 - Shaun Bergin & George Koutsioufitis Creating A Fun, Professional Business Culture

Shaun Bergin and George Koutsioufitis are the owners of Fairfield Podiatry in Victoria, Australia, and they have created a podiatry business overflowing with professionalism, fun and a business culture that would make many podiatrists envious.

I first noticed they were different when I came across their website, and from that point, I knew I had to have them as guests on this podcast.

Today we discuss:

  • How and why they develop a friendly website, unlike many other podiatry websites.
  • The importance of making sure their website was a representation of who they were. Boring was not an option.
  • Partnerships
    • Why George thought Shaun was going to be the right business partner.
      • He acted like a business owner before he became the business owner.
      • Sharing the same values
      • Having the right work ethic
  • Being part of the International Medical Team at the 2004 Olympics in Athens
  • What to look for when you’re employing someone else.
    • They've got to be there right fit.
    • Part-time employees are never 100% invest because their mind is in more than one place.
    • Don't try and fill a void with anyone; you're best to plan ahead
  • BusinessLessons
    • Things take much longer to implement than expected.
    • It much harder to get the team on the same page as you when changes a made.
  • The power of spending time together as a team and telling stories.

Final Tips

  1. Explore the different options and pathways available to you when you graduate. Work out what you like and works for you; this will keep you in the profession.
  2. There are still a few too many podiatrists that don’t look outside the box, and they make the profession boring and not that great for new graduates to work with.
  3. You need to think outside the box and make your work interesting and expose yourself to as many areas as you can in podiatry so you can think laterally.
  4. You need professional and personal development. Ask yourself, why do you want to be a good podiatrist? You may find out podiatry is not for you and you should be doing something else.

085 - Damian Murray The Podiatrist In The Pinstriped Scrubs

Damian Murray owns and manages three multidisciplinary clinics in his hometown of Cardiff, Wales. He often refers to himself as a podiatrist in the pinstriped scrubs because one morning he will be a podiatrist and the next he is a businessman.

Damian also operates a podiatry supply business called Murray Medical, and a waste management business. Being the serial entrepreneur he is, he has also started his latest ventured the Home Footcare™ franchise.

On this episode we discuss:

  • The benefits of having a good podiatry business and it's not all about making money.
  • How and why he set up Murray Medical
  • Finding the right balance between working as a podiatrist and podiatry business owner.

"Once I tick that box I've got to find another box to tick."

  • Running a good business is not about over-selling, it's about understanding your patient 's/customer's needs.
  • The power of diversifying outside of podiatry
  • Why every practitioner needs to franchise their podiatry business, whether they want to do it or not.
  • The benefits of having a franchiser mindset.
  • How systems add value to your business.

Final Tip

If you love being a podiatrist, and enjoy treating patients, leave the business to other people more qualified. Get mentors in business and marketing to do all the heaving lifting, letting you spend more time doing what you love to do.
