Ep 134 - Dr Richard Blake The Story Behind the Inverted Orthotic Technique

Dr Richard Blake shares the inspirational story behind the Inverted Orthotic Technique and the obstacles he had to overcome to get his unique orthotic design ideas in front of the general podiatry population.

At the time, The Root Theory was the accepted way of making an orthotic. Still, Dr Blake proved that you could invert an orthotic way past 3 degrees inverted to get the results you want, and what you may not know, Merton Root was his biggest advocate of this new paradigm shift.

Dr Richard Blake has been a podiatrist for over 40 years, focusing on sports medicine and biomechanics. He is a Clinical Instructor at the California School of Podiatric Medicine and the author of Inverted Orthotic Technique and Secrets to Keep Moving.

He has also been the past President American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine.

We also discuss:

  • The first successful inverted orthotics at 24 degrees use to eliminate knee pain.
  • Why it's okay to break the rules.
  • The help, support and guidance he received from Merton Root
  • Why he stepped away from the speaking circuit for 14-years
  • His thoughts on podiatrists that don’t like orthotics, the barefoot movement and footwear.

Final Tip

Find what you like to do and follow that. Yes, initially, you have to do everything because you have bills to pay, but if you can eventually focus on what you love doing, it will bring you the most joy each day.

133 - Five Common Employment Mistakes Made by Podiatrists

When it comes to employing another podiatrist in your business, I think there are five common employment mistakes many employers make. If you can avoid these five mistakes, I think you will have a happier work environment and a more profitable business.

I’m sure there are many more than five mistakes, but here are the top five employment mistakes I’ve noticed over the past thirty or so years.

  1. Employing a podiatrist too early
  2. Employing a podiatrist without have your systems, frameworks in place
  3. Employing a podiatrist with vastly different personal values
  4. Not culling patients
  5. Employing a podiatrist too late

The SOLUSHIN: A Clinically-Validated Way to Treat Shin Splints Faster

Medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS), or more commonly referred to as "shin splints" is an injury of the lower leg that is common in runners. An often poorly understood injury, MTSS can be an extremely frustrating injury to treat for both the sufferer and the podiatrist.

After suffering from the injury, award-winning biomedical engineer Ben Lindsay teamed up with a medical doctor and designer (whom both had the injury as well) to invent the Solushin, a clinically-trialled medical device that serves as an adjunct to current MTSS treatments.

In this webinar, Ben will discuss MTSS, how to identify and diagnose MTSS, highlight the best evidence for the management of the injury, and how the Solushin ties into current clinical practice including an overview of the clinical studies and how to best prescribe the device.
