129 - Dr Nick Fuller Interval Weight Loss

Dr Nick Fuller is a globally recognised obesity expert from the University of Sydney and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He has degrees in exercise physiology, nutrition and dietetics, and a doctorate in obesity and weight management.

He is the resident obesity expert on Channel 9’s Today Show and is the author of three best-selling books on the Interval Weight Loss program.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Main contributors to the obesity epidemic.
    • Some people diet themselves heavier.
  • Barriers to long-term weight-loss success.
    • Your body fights back to gain weight.
  • Evidence-based tips to use with the patient for long-term weight-loss.
    • Eating from big to small.
    • Keto diets and intermittent fasting make bold claims but cannot back it up with science.
  • The six principles of the interval weight loss plan:
    1. You can't fight evolution.
    2. Reach for nature first
    3. Full rainbow
    4. Use chopsticks
    5. Choose to move
    6. No blue light after twilight

Television Wants Visual Attention

When you watch a weight loss program on television, the show's goal is to gain visual attention by showing dramatic weight loss and body transformations in quite a short period of time.

Dr Nick Fuller says these shows have got it all wrong, and most people who lose a sizable amount of weight will more than likely put in all back on again, plus a little bit more.

Your body will fight back, and it will win.

Final Tip

You have the ability to educate your patients, friends and colleagues. And when they are educated, they will feel informed and empowered.

Ep 128 - (UNCUT) Dr Daniel Bonanno The World of Academia

Why does someone become a podiatry lecturer and academic? I've often pondered this question. My guest Dr Daniel Bonanno, Senior Lecturer at La Trobe University in Victoria, Australia, openly shares his podiatry journey and sheds some light on the academia world.

I can honestly say I learnt a lot doing this podcast interview, and it was all positive.

Daniel's teaching and research are focused on the effects and effectiveness of foot orthoses and footwear, walking and running biomechanics, and preventing and managing lower limb injuries.

He is currently undertaking some research on the Factors that Influence Basketball Footwear Selection, and he is keen to hear from any adult basketball players of any level, from recreational to elite.

If you would like to take part and help, please follow the links below to a survey he has developed.

In this episode, we also discuss:

  • How you can become a tutor or lecturer.
  • The path or research.
  • The enjoyment of watching students develop their skills.
  • The challenges of academia.
  • How the lecturing team works within the department and curriculum design.
  • How the graduating students of 2020 coped with COVID-19 and why it has made them more resilient.
  • The Deans of Podiatry Group
  • The benefits to the profession for clinicians and academics to work more closely.

Ep 127 (UNCUT) - Lindsey Ebbs The Art of Educated Waffling

Lindsey Ebbs is from Whitby, in the UK, and she openly admits she is a waffler. Still, she is not just any waffler, as described by her patients; she is an educated waffler. Through waffling, she has begun to etch out a new career path, in addition to her podiatry career, that she never thought possible a year ago.

As Lindsey explains, COVID has made us look at our podiatry businesses differently and how we communicate with our patients. What started as a simple newsletter idea has grown into something much larger.

Today we discuss:

  • The art of educated waffling
  • Covid and the changes needed to be made in business
  • Writing like your having a conversation.
  • The evolution of her patient newsletter
  • Sharing our podiatry knowledge with other businesses

Showing An Interest

During Covid, Lindsey became interested in what other businesses were doing in her small town to survive.

What she learnt really interested her, so she thought others might feel the same, so she started writing about other businesses in her patient newsletter, and it was very successful.

As podiatrists, we get to chinwag a lot, so we're in a perfect position to hear about what is happening in town.

Invited to Write

The business articles in her newsletter caught the attention of a local tourist publication called The Whitby Guide. Now her articles are published monthly and read by tens of thousands of readers around the world.

Guest Blogging

Lindsey then approached Travel and Trek, thinking they wouldn't have much content about footwear and feet on their website, and asked if they would be interested in her podiatry knowledge, and they said YES.

"As podiatrists, we often forget about the skillset we have, and we need to tell people what we do in as many areas as we can".

The easiest way to get started is to think of all the businesses that could benefit from your knowledge and start contacting them.

You need to put yourself out there, and the worst thing that can happen is they say NO, and it won't kill you.

Final Tip

Look at the businesses around you and look at what they’re doing. Can you help raise their profile? Can your podiatry knowledge be helpful? If it can, connect with them and provide the content.

126 - Dr Don Pelto Patient Treatment Presentations & Practice Mastery

Dr Don Pelto is a podiatrist in Worcester, Massachusetts, USA, and he has developed a unique way of educating his patients with well thought out treatment presentations.

He loves practice management, marketing and being a podiatrist. He has a video interview series called Podiatry Practice Mastery, where he interviews other professionals about their insights and experience in practice and business.

On this episode we discuss:

  • The importance of finding what you like doing in podiatry and doing more of it.
  • Taking responsibility for our actions and learning from it.
  • Patient presentations and how they evolved and expanded by simply using Google Slides.
  • Using checklists and frameworks.
  • Patient education follow-up using videos, books and other tools.
  • Tool - Patient Education Genius
  • Creating different pathways of communication.

What is Mastery?

It's a constant and never-ending improvement. It’s not getting to a singular place; it’s a process that you’re always on.

Refining Your Expertise

There are many experts in podiatry, but what if you are also an expert at Youtube, and then in podcasting as well. You are then a special expert within a particular niche.

"Patient presentations take away prejudgment and everyone, therefore, gets the same information".

Communication

It's important to explain to every patient:

  • What they have
  • Why they have it
  • What it will cost in both time and money

And then explain what treatments you would suggest for their specific case.

Question Yourself

At the end of each day, look at your patient list and ask yourself these questions:

  1. What worked well
  2. What didn’t work so well
  3. What would I do differently, and what’s the plan.

When you say I, it means your taking responsibility for the outcome and not blaming others.

Increased Frequency

The more frequently you see a patient, the more chance you have of them following your instructions.

Patients take more action when they are being tracked more closely, so you need to track your patients' progress.

To get patients to take action, you may need to offer them some form of incentives. What the motivation may be is yet to be determined.

Final Tip

Always be learning.

125: Zahava Robinson is A True Inspiration (or A Little Crazy)

In 2020, Zahava Robinson was pregnant, became a mother, was in labour during her final year podiatry exams and had three major exams two weeks after birth.

When she did her final placement in St Vincent's Hospital, she still had to wake up every hour during the night to feed, yet she still managed to finish her degree, fulltime.

And on top of all this, she is now opening up her own podiatry clinic, Bondi Podiatry at Bondi Junction, New South Wales.

Some would say she is a little crazy, but I think she is an inspiration and is an example of what is possible when you put your mind to it.

On this episode we also discuss:

  • Why her grades at university improved. Her mum-brain became her superpower.
  • The benefits of planning.
  • Asking for help and building a support network.
  • The importance of getting a balance between work and home.

"Not only did I except the situation of 2020, but I also took control of the situation and made the best of it".

Google Calendar

This is a brilliant tip on efficiency: Add everything you need to get done into your Google Calendar, and your goal is to move it forward and take action.

Don't wait for the next day, get it done now, therefore freeing up time for the future so you can enjoy life more.

“I like things being done yesterday, not tomorrow.”

Final Tip

Enjoy time with your family and your kids. Money is there to have a good life, not the other way around.

Sack Your C & D Patients

If you would show the door to a rude team member, why not do the same to rude patients. It just makes sense.
