Neuropathy, Cancer and A Career Picot: The Dana Cardinas Story

When you think of someone leaving a profession they love, it’s rarely by choice. In this powerful episode of the Podiatry Legends Podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with my good friend Dana Cardinas, a high-energy, highly skilled podiatrist who built a successful career in Texas.

She loved everything about podiatry – from treating complex foot problems to dancing down the halls with patients. So, leaving was difficult.

Episode Highlights

  1. Forced Retirement: Dana's sudden loss of hand function mid-surgery triggered a career-ending diagnosis in just three months.

  2. Cancer Diagnosis: A casual abdominal complaint led to a colonoscopy, and a shocking Stage 3C colon cancer discovery.

  3. Turning Adversity Into Advocacy: Dana created ColonTown’s neuropathy subgroup, now shaping chemo treatment standards globally.

  4. Unexpected Entrepreneurship: What started as fun t-shirts for a Mexican restaurant became a thriving promotional product business.

  5. Purpose After Podiatry: Dana continues to serve others with the same passion, just in a different profession.
