018 - Scott Sorensen Biomechanics, Pressure Platforms & Milling Orthotics

In 2006, I decided to use pressure/scanning platforms in my biomechanical assessments and patient education, and this is how I met my guest Scott Sorensen. I contribute this technology as one of the main reasons why my podiatry business in Cairns stood out from the crowd and became a market leader.

Scott Sorensen lives on the Sunshine Coast, owns a podiatry business called Footpoint, has a CADCAM manufacturing business and also supplies Bodytech biomechanical assessment systems.

On this episode we discuss:

  • Analogue versus Digital - Plaster Cast versus Scanning
  • Business efficiency
  • Creating a communication pathway. If they can see foot pressure and video it helps with communicating the message and information.
  • Orthotic education
  • Patient education - taking it to the next level
  • 3D Scanning and printing
  • The differences, biomechanically speaking, between the UK, USA and Australia
  • Commercial integration

No One Remembers Who Came Second

You've got to have some mongrel in you and be willing to try these different techniques and different equipment, but you also do need to know when to walk away.

No one remembers who came second, so you can't keep waiting to see what your competition is doing and then try and copy them. Be a market leader in your area.

"Keep your overheads low it's a good foundation to start a business".

CADCAM Milling Machines

To have a mill installed in your podiatry practice, you need a specific skill base knowledge first. You need to be confident on a grinder and be able to make and understand orthotic adjustments.

Scott also recommends visiting his podiatry business in Noosa and see how the Bodytech Systems functions in a real clinical situation. You can also see how the CADCAM milling machines work.

BONUS: It's a great reason to visit Noosa and make it an educational and tax-deductible trip.

Australian National Podiatry Conference: 22-24 May

At the upcoming Australian National Podiatry Conference in Adelaide, Scott Sorensen, Paul Graham and I will have a booth (C5) in the Expo area.

If you have time, please come and visit us and together we will be able to answer any questions you have in regards to pressure platforms, scanning, orthotic milling machines and our upcoming WORKSHOP - Biomechanics & Business on the Gold Coast in June.

I will have my podcasting equipment set up and will be planning to release a short podcast episode at the end of each day, so please drop by for a quick podiatry chat.

WORKSHOP - Biomechanics & Business: Profit From A Better Understanding. Gold Coast 7-8 June BOOK NOW

Every successful podiatrist has an excellent foundation in biomechanics, it's that simple, and this two-day workshop is going to be jam-packed with useful biomechanical information you can apply immediately in your business and with your patients.

In addition to having excellent biomechanical skills, it's equally important to know how to market these skills. You can have the most advanced biomechanical equipment and have acquired biomechanical skills far beyond any of your competitors, but without a well thought out marketing strategy, it will, unfortunately, go unnoticed.

This is why we're bringing Biomechanics and Business together in one 2-Day Workshop.

If you have any questions about this episode, or our Gold Coast Workshop, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.comor you can contact Scott Sorensen at sales@body-tech.com.au

017 - Nick Knight Incorporating Rehabilitation Into Your Podiatry Practice

Nick Knight is the owner of NK Sports Podiatry based in the south of England, and he has spent several years refining his skills in the area of lower limb rehabilitation and incorporating this service into his highly successful podiatry practice.

Lower limb rehabilitation is not the domain of physiotherapy, and adding rehab to your treatment protocols is like adding another string to your treatment bow, but it's essential to know your limits and boundaries.

On this episode we discuss:

  • How Nick got started in rehabilitation
  • Where to start if you want to have a rehabilitation practice
  • Achilles Tendinopathy, Patella Femoral Pain and ankle rehab
  • Rehabilitation versus orthotic therapy
  • Custom and pre-made orthotics and when to use them in the rehab process
  • Nicks thinking on ultrasound, acupuncture and shockwave therapy
  • Evidence-based practising
  • Auditing your treatment and collecting data to become a better practitioner
  • The benefits of doing independent data audits

If you have any questions about this episode, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com, or you can contact Nick Knight at nick@nksportspodiatry.co.uk

016 - Kristi Boles Allied Wellness & Fundamentals of Healing

At thirty years of age, Kristi Boles had the world at her feet. She was married with children and was running nine successful podiatry practices in Victoria, Australia; however, her health took a sudden downward turn resulting in heart surgery and a very long lay off from running her businesses. She was also diagnosed with Marfan's Syndrome.

On this podcast episode, Kristi openly talks about her sudden, unexpected health issues and also how she has transformed her own life, and that of her patients by being more aware of the fundamentals of healing and good health.

Taking Wednesday's Off

Kristi takes off every Wednesday to rejuvenate, work on her business, with her team member and focus on business mentoring. She gets excited on Tuesday afternoons knowing she has the next day off.

Previous guest, on Episode 003 - Peter Wishnie calls this his Rainmaker Day.

Marfans Syndrome & Dissected Aorta

She was running nine podiatry businesses and working full time herself, which lead to burnout and aorta dissected. This health scare began her journey about better health and bringing this knowledge into practice.

When you have a health scare, you get a whole new perspective about being a mother, a wife and a business owner. It doesn't take long to work out your priorities.

This was when Kristi decided to consolidate her businesses and integrate nutrition into her life and businesses systems.

It's All About Good Communication

After her doctors gave her the all clear to go back to work Kristi realised they never listened to how she was feeling.

Yes her heart was fine, but no one asked about her diet and overall health and wellbeing. She was not drinking enough water, had high stress, and even though she was eating well, she was missing the fundamentals of good health.

She had migraines, fatigued, no energy to last the full day and needed an afternoon sleep.

With good communication, you can set better treatment plans, and after listening to your patients, you will also know if they are capable of doing it.

Journey of Self-Education

So many people with chronic problems:
  • Don’t have resources
  • Do not understand the fundamentals of healing
  • Need assistance in making better decisions themselves

It is a tool for practitioners to use with their patients and it's an evidence-based program, and it stays within the scope of practice. It's used as:
  • A screening tool
  • Patient education booklet
  • Patient diary
  • Patient referral tool
  • Resource library
If you're interested in using the program use Promo code PODLEGENDS discount

As health practitioners, we’re all singing the same tune, which is why we all need to be working together for the patients' benefit. It shows we care.

Keeping Patients Accountable

When you check in with your patients about their hydration and diet, it will make them more conscious, and they will make an effort to do the right thing and improve. It's about empowered patients.

Patients will start making the decisions themselves and success leads to more success. It also has a mirroring effect; we become that role model as well.

Number One tip

Truly listening to your patients is where it all starts. They know their body better than you, but it begins by asking the right questions.

If you have any questions about this episode, podiatry marketing or one-on-one business mentoring, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com

015 - Clifton Bradeley SUB-4 Sports Passion

If you want to have a long and prosperous career in podiatry, you've got to love what you do each day, and my guest, UK based Podiatrist, Clifton Bradeley does exactly that.

Clifton runs a podiatry business called Sub-4, but previous to this he was a world-class middle-distance runner representing both England and Great Britain and in 1985 he was the first person to run the mile in under 4 mins, indoors on English soil.

His time was 3:57:88, and he was on track to compete at the 1988 Olympics until his career came to an end due to injury, but it's this injury that steered Clifton towards a podiatry career.

On this episode we discuss:

1:30 - The importance of listening: If you give yourself time to listen to someone else's story you'll learn that everybody has something interesting to say.

2:45 - His biggest career mistake that cost him 150,000 pounds, but also taught him some valuable lessons.

"Never be afraid to pull the plug and say, it failed".

5:25 - Benefits of closing a business when it's failing.

When you have a few consecutive years of success, when you're in the flow, or on a roll, you think you're indestructible, and this is when you need to keep your ego in check.

"If anyone says to you there are successful all the time they are lying".

7:00 - Why failure can be a good and bad thing. Everything cannot be successful all of the time, it's part of life.

If you've got a product or service in the right area that people need and want, and you have the business systems in place and you're the right person for the job, you will succeed. But if you're backing a donkey it doesn't matter how good you are; you will fail. You need to know how to identify the donkey and do it early.

11:35 - The benefits of a customer-focused business.

13:20 - SUB-4: The brand itself is everything, we protect the brand, and we promote the brand. Each year we spend money on exhibition space to promote the SUB-4 brand and business. This year we'll spend 10,000 pounds, but in previous years we have spent more than 100,000 pounds.

18:45 - Attitude of gratitude

22:30 - How his athletic career has helped his business success. It's all about dedication.

25:30 - His decision to take up a scholarship at Iowa State University

28:30 - Flying to new New York City for Podiatry Treatment.

Even though his first pair of orthotics were completely wrong and caused more problems, it did lead to an interest in the biomechanical assessment process and his interest in podiatry.

29:35 - Finding his passion:

Once his career began, and after talking to a few runners as patients, it didn't take Clifton long to find his home and where he felt most comfortable in podiatry.

Clifton quickly worked out he spoke their language, and it's important to be passionate about what you're doing every day.

33:10 - Personal and Professional Growth:

You're going to get bored if you're not challenging yourself to be better. As human beings curiosity drives us, and if you're doing the same thing every day and have no passion for improving, life and work will be boring.

34:30 - Being honest with patients when you're not sure what is causing their problem.

"Be honest with patients, they're not stupid, and they deserve respect".

37:25 - Aim to get control of your resources. Have a goal to buy your building and set up your lab. The more resources you control, the more power you have over your future.

38:30 - An excellent question to ask yourself is, What's Next? Before you end one project, you should already be preparing for his next step.

39:05 - Money will come if you keep reinvesting back into your business.

What type of business do you want to have?

Do you want a lifestyle business where you work as a solo practitioner, or do you want a company where you employ others and possibly have multiple locations?

Being a solo practitioner has its benefits, and your goal should be to keep your expenses low. The fewer costs you have, the more money you save.  A company, on the other hand, you need to pay yourself a set salary, and for the next few years, you need to reinvest the rest.

If you set up your business with a company mindset you've got to be continually progressing and growing, however, a lifestyle business can stay static much longer, but you also don't make money when you have holidays.

014 - Josh Truscott The Ultimate Podiatrist & CPD Made Easy

To become a better podiatrist you cannot underestimate the value of ongoing education, and as part of our registration requirements you must be involved in continuing professional development, CPD, but living in rural areas do not always make this easy compared to our city counterparts. Josh Truscott, the owner of The Ultimate Podiatrist, makes CPD easy for podiatrists in both Australia and the UK and helps take away the pain of compliance with registration boards.

Josh Truscott graduated from Latrobe University in 1998 and travelled and worked for a few years in Canada and the UK before settling down in private practice in Tasmania and eventually Bowral, NSW.

On this episode we discuss:

1:02 - CPD in Australia and the UK, and the obstacles rural podiatrists face with educating because of travel and time.

"The more you study and the more practice the more you realise you don't know"

6:00 - Working overseas after graduation.

9:30 - The transition from an employee to a business owner and eventually starting The Ultimate Podiatrist

12:35 - Selling his Bowral podiatry business and benefits of going fulltime with The Ultimate Podiatrist.

14:20 - The Ultimate Podiatrist has developed different types of learnings activities. For example, Expert Presentations Modules are webinars shown ten times per year and presented by experts in the podiatry profession. Simon Bartold, episode 04 was the first expert presenter.

Webinar Schedule

Webinars are usually run on the first Monday of each month, February - November, and recorded. To date, there are 25 recorded versions in the archives. After a podiatrist watches a webinar and completes a short quiz, a certificate is generated for proof of CPD compliance.

17:20 - Membership categories: Monthly and yearly subscriptions or you can pay per module.

20:15 - Josh runs additional events throughout the year himself, and also some events are joint ventures.

22:45 - Finding something you enjoy and your good at and pursue this interest.

27:20 - What's next? A career development program /personal coaching.

29:00 - Benefits of looking for a mentor and talking with more experienced podiatrists.

30:05 - Vital Few and Trivial Many. The Podiatry Gods

32:35 - Content is relevant to all podiatrists, but tracks are specific to each country, so US Podiatrists would also benefit.

34:30 - Josh is always looking for people to collaborate with so if you have a course or workshop contact him at josh@ultimatepodiatrist.com.au or via his websites:

013 - Dianne Ashcroft Lessons Learnt After 300+ Videos

Shooting videos for your podiatry business become so much easier when you stop worrying about what other people think and just get on with sharing what you know. Dianne Ashcroft from Warrington, England and owner of Lane Ends Podiatry has shot more than 300 plus videos for her podiatry business, and she admits the hardest video to shoot was video number one.
However, after shooting and posting her first video Dianne realised she didn't die, so she just kept doing them because she understood the value they held for her podiatry business and patients.
Be Relatable
The easiest way to relate to someone is just to be yourself, so when you're shooting videos don't try and be something you're not. Be authentic.
Yes, some patients will not like what you create. They will deselect themselves if they do not enjoy your videos, which is great.
Don't Worry About Opinions
Don't allow yourself to get held back by someone else's opinion. If they don't like your videos, no one is forcing them to watch, but if one person watches it and gets something out of it, it was worth doing.
15 or 15000 Views
It's not about how many views you get, 15 or 15000, or the number of positive comments you receive, it's about sharing what you know and waiting to see who you help.
Who cares if you get a few thumbs down. They're not your market.
Where Do You Get Your Ideas?
Not a lot of thought or planning goes into Dianne's videos. If an idea pops into her head, she picks up her phone and starts recording. It's that simple.
It's not about having perfect hair, clothing, lighting or being in the right mood; it's about being spontaneous and understanding you need to be you. That will attract people.
Use personal stories, interests and even your challenges.
Make Your Videos and Post Personal
Dianne decided to create Weigh-In-Wednesday, and she used her own weight loss goal for the weekly posts. When you put yourself out there to your patients, that's accountability.
What holds us back is this fear of what people will think of us. Ask yourself, what's the worse that can happen? Don't be afraid to share your interests.
Share Now, Not Later
Don't wait to share what you know. If you wait another year to share your podiatry knowledge, that's one more year where people could have benefited from your experience.
It's not fair not to share what you know. You owe it to your patients to share your thoughts and ideas.
You Will Be Five Years Older Regardless
Dianne didn't start podiatry as a career until she was 27 years of age and realised you're never too old to start pursuing what your interests.

Put in the time and effort now, because in five years you're still going to be five years older. If there's an area of podiatry you want to get better in, there's no better time than now to get started. Stop putting it off.
"If you want something to change you've got to do something to make the change happen".
Learn From Nick Knight
If there's a specific area of podiatry you want to pursue, be like Nick Knight (Episode 011) and pursue it 100%. Nick Knight wanted to do Musculoskeletal & Sports Podiatry, and that's what he did, but he had to put in the work.
"When you see someone doing something you want to do, it means it is doable".
Becoming interested in one area of podiatry is a great way to niche your business, and it also saves a lot of money when it comes to marketing.
No Regrets
You don't want to be ninety-five years of age and have regrets for not doing something you always wanted to do. Fear can hold you back, but you've got to learn to get out of your own way.
"Stop worrying about what other people think".
Dream Bigger
We can afford to dream even bigger now because of technology. How we communicate with each other, and our patients have changed so much over the past ten years.
Technology is there for the taking, and if you don't take the opportunity, you've only got yourself to blame. Using videos to promote your podiatry business and your brand is just one piece of technology that is available to everybody.
The Pods Heal Heel Campaign
This campaign was all about podiatrists working together to share a universal message about podiatry, consistently over three weeks and it paid big dividends for everyone involved and also for the profession.
"You must get out of the mindset that every podiatrist is a competitor; they're not."

012 - Jennie Thompson The Foodie Podiatrist

The podiatry profession offers so many opportunities and my guest, Jennie Thompson from Sydney, who has been practising podiatry for 37 years, is a Clinical Educator at the University of Newcastle and a mad foodie has proven you can run a successful podiatry business and also chase your passions outside of podiatry.

On this podcast episode we discuss:

1:25 - The benefits of being passionate about things outside of podiatry

3:35 - The reality of running a podiatry business. No one teaches us how to run a business, so we must search for information.

6:15 - The beneficial effects of connecting people.

7:10 - Working on the business, not in the business.

7:35 - As a business owner it can be incredibly lonely. Therefore it's a good idea to meet up with like-minded people and talk about your problems openly and together find solutions.

10:15 - How Jennie brought her passion for food into her podiatry business.

10:55 - How cooking relates to running a business and a team. They both have ingredients.

12:10 - Too many podiatrists work in silos. We should be working closely with other health professionals.

13:30 - The importance of learning the basics of podiatry and how it relates to treatment protocols.

15:00 - How did Jennie know it was time to sell her clinic and pursue other interests?

"Get business advice early in your career so you're not being chased by fear".

17:00 - A well-run business will give you time back.

18:20 - Why working for yourself immediately upon graduation is not the best idea.

  • Learn from others mistakes
  • Check out other clinics during your holidays
  • Enjoy your holidays for two years
  • Then decide if you want to work for yourself

20:15 - The benefits of having a mentor.

"Enjoy yourself. You've only got one life so enjoy the day".

Monday Morning Tip
